I am fully aware that mento had been around long before R&B, it was the Jamaican folk music with roots in the african folk music brought over by slaves, and I have a good sized collection (including some mento) and have done a lot of reading on the development of reggae.

Whilst I'm not denying that mento was influential in the development of ska, the main driving force was the desire to create local music in the style of R&B for the sound systems. If you listen to a lot of early ska it is pretty much R&B, of course there are exceptions, there always are.

"After World War II, Jamaicans purchased radios in increasing numbers and were able to hear rhythm and blues music from Southern United States cities such as New Orleans by artists such as Fats Domino and Louis Jordan. The stationing of American military forces during and after the war meant that Jamaicans could listen to military broadcasts of American music and there was a constant influx of records from the US.

To meet the demand for that music, entrepreneurs such as Prince Buster, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, and Duke Reid formed sound systems. As jump blues and more traditional R&B began to ebb in popularity in the early 1960s, Jamaican artists began recording their own version of the genres. The style was of bars made up of four triplets, similar to that of "My baby just cares for me" by Nina Simone, but was characterized by a guitar chop on the off beat - known as an upstroke or skank - with horns taking the lead and often following the off beat skank and piano emphasizing the bass line and, again, playing the skank. Drums kept 4/4 time and the bass drum was accented on the 3rd beat of each 4-triplet phrase. The snare would play side stick and accent the 3rd beat of each 4-triplet phrase. The upstroke sound can also be found in other Caribbean forms of music, such as mento and calypso."

actually, as I just walked into work I thought of two things.....




a) if ska had never been a part of my life i suspect there would be a lot less check in my wardrobe (in fact I may have to dig out some photos.. hehehe)

b) it is very wrong to like ska... it is very right to love it



Here in Brighton, as the summer starts in earnest, we have these all day Skafests on the beach once a month... all ages, all day for a fiver - The Beat headlines regularly and you get all different flavours- old and new. I get my 13 yr old neice to visit for the weekend and we go down for a skank out

Yeah.I know the website that's quoted from.But it was nothing most people into Ska didn't already know.

Not once did I ever say R&B had no place in the creation of Ska.And I only said that Mento was the foundation,that R&B and Jazz fused with it.

However,you do seem to adhere to a belief that R&B is the beginning and end of all modern music.I do agree that modern R&B is not the same as it used to be,but it's still rooted in R&B,regardless how much it sucks.Just like there was crappy 3rd wave Ska,but as Logic said,it's still Ska.

You do have a lot of knowledge about Ska,but you don't know it all,and I'll never say that I know it all.What's funny though,is that you say it's a sad thing when someone gets offended by your opinion,yet you seem to get offended when someone comes back at your opinions with facts.I am almost willing to bet dollars that you had to look Mento up,just to try and prove me wrong.That was a very important detail about Ska that you didn't bring up.And anyone who really knows Ska music would have mentioned Mento straightaway,not just the R&B.

dara get a tattoo like one of those little bosstones labels they had in the jacknife to a swan album sleeve. They are actual tattoo designs but im sure you can get some inspiration of of that maybe.

If smugness equates to posting rationally and with a strong opinion, then call me smug if you wish, it’s all interpretation anyway. As for 3rd wave ‘ska’ I said I didn’t like it, that was all. Funnily enough, people sometimes have different taste in music.

As for the influence of R&B and ska, that was in response to another post that mentioned a similarity and I agreed, I didn’t think it worth mentioning Mento in that context.

If you saw my original post in here, it was to post some youtube links of some of my favourite ska tunes, it was irrelevant who posted the thread. If you actually look back, it has been Blizzard who has been ‘stalking’ my comments. Check back if you wish.

And for your information, this is a forum, which normally involves discussion. I have seen no trolling since I’ve been here, you really need to lighten up and not take things so seriously. It’s only a forum.
