Alright, I got the reason demo (and I can see why some people aren't so crazy about this one), but apparently demos are not available for logic or cubase.

I'll be checking out those others listed by £10 Bag this week.

Reason:

before I start let me say that I haven't used reason all that extensively. this is based on first impressions and my attempts at learning how to use it, which failed.

i particularly hated redrum and other elements that involved the sluggish programming ordeal you have to go through with a lot of hardware.

at least it has a nice sequencer but seriously, too much unnecessary shit in reason for me. i go for practical.

even if it doesn't support vst, at least it can be used AS a vst, and it is a fact that reason has some nice synths.

in the end I do recommend adding it to your collection of DAW's if possible in the future.

also, in no way am i saying that the 'rear panel wiring' is what threw me off. if it is what threw you off, it may not be for you. but i recommend taking a few minutes to get past what seems like the complexity of wiring the equipment, in order to experience the equipment itself. the wiring is by far easier than anything else you will have to learn with any other DAW.



maybe i'll give my thoughts on some other programs but this just burned me out for now hehe

as far as cubase and logic are concerned - try them out at a shop. should be very worth your while, and people that work at pro audio shops (bar gc lol) are generally helpful. they can show you some differences and how things generally work with each of them.

Reaper is definitely worth a bash and it's sort-of kind-of free (unrestricted demo and if you're good and pay for the noncommercial license it's still stupidly cheap).

I use EnergyXT and I'd recommend trying it but the stage of development it's in at the moment is pissing a lot of people off - it's got everything I personally want so I'm groovy with it (and the drum programming is so comfortable it's like having a warm bath while you're writing a beat) but it's also missing stuff like dual core support, and some people have stability issues with the current version.

Why is it sluggish?

Ableton Live 5, and Reason 3... just rediscovered I have Cubase SX3 on my lappy and have been using it for mastering.

You are seriously missing out on a wonderful piece of software. If you are used to any other prog, it takes a minute to learn as some things are counter-intuitive until you realize why they did things the way they did, then everything else seems wrong. IMO anyway.


Seriously, if you aint usin it, Ill give you a $20... hell, lll give you $40 and pay for shipping to LA. I needs to upgrade from Live 5 badly...

Not really....

Getting started with the right software is important if you ask me... It's well worth asking people their opinions an getting an idea of where you should go.

The end product is the most important factor but whatever software you use it has to be comfortable for you so pick out a few popular ones and give it a go.

9 times out of 10 I use FL8, I use adobe audition to master stuff and sometimes delve with cubase 3 sx, depends how I feel

Cubase and Wavelab with 2 UAD cards with neve/roland SPL plugins etc..
