Very long shutter speed on a camera. With the shutter open on long exposures you get this effect since the Earth rotates, the stars are not at fixed places in the sky but appear to move, (more or less towards the west).

yup, this is why the north star is used for navigation, it is the one most directly above the earths axis, therefore does not move as much much as the rest (itll be the one at the centre of all the concentric circles)
