Exactly the same with me. It's weird how I kept moving seemingly upwards in the DAW department and studio one seems to have been the ceiling for me! I have tried moving from it but just can't beat the workflow. There definitely are some features missing, but they are small and at the speed presonus are updating I don't think they will be missing for long.

Quality software.

What are these instrument racks? I've heard a lot of people mention it but not too sure what it is or what it does that cant be done in anything?

Layering drums with racks is very easy. Plus setting up FX chains. It's too long to explain

well if some one could make a wrapper plugin like fl has new patcher and albeton has there amazing racks.

a vst like that would be great to build complex synths and effects with macros and knobs etc

miss the racks in live. but thats all.

There are some very good third-party options for plugin-hosting plugins. I want to find a good open-source one, though.

I don't have the patience to make rhythms with audio. Seems like such a convoluted way of doing it when you could just have a midi clip etc. Also how do you swing audio or apply grooves to it? Don't you have to zoom in a ton and manually move each hit around till it swings? Long

have logic but it's a pain to program drums in audio. (don't understand this ultrabeat thing)
and it has no browser like ableton.. workflow is kinda slow

You can change all the hotkeys to match Cubase if you want. Demo it for a couple weeks and tell me it's not the barnacle's ballsack.

Yeah it's great, it doesn't have curved automation tho, but allows you to draw in shapes. That's about all from what I remember. Ignore what people say about limited FX slots - you can just route a track to another track and get more slots. Cubase gets a lot of hate on this forum, but I'm guessing a lot of people don't know its full potential. Easy to learn but takes a while to master everything that it can do.

And the control room feature is pretty unique, I don't think there's another DAW that allows you to set up outputs like that. The key commands and macros come in handy too, it'll take you a while to configure it but save you a ton of time when you're up and running.

Actually, it looks very interesting! I only want it as a platform for mixing as I plan on using VSTs (not impressed by most DAW's own) so this looks very useful, thanks for sharing

Yeah I thought about it as it seems the best platform for mixing, it seems a lot of people in this forum want everything ready in the box like Logic and stuff. Thought initially I just want it for solo dance music production, eventually I would like to record and mix bands, especially for dub. For all the cool features that Cubase 7 has, it doesn't seem necessary and great music has been made on far less. As long as I can sync midi controllers well enough for 'live' editing and reamp like a tape recorder that'll do until I actually buy a real tape recorder

It's fantastic for audio editing and routing. It's got a delay compensated wet/dry knob for every effect. Just a bunch of little things I take for granted but forget other DAWs don't have. You can change the track layout formats too which is nice during mixing, for instance when you want a tall fader with the effect slots on the side instead of the top. Although I'll usually use iZotope Insight if I need to match a loudness spec or something, it's nice having a vu meter integrated into the regular master ppm. You can rearrange the screen however you want into screenset presets, and make your own toolbars with macros for actions you perform frequently.

Check out an audio editing tutorial and a track routing tutorial to see how smooth it is.

Reaper is awesome. I tried it for some days and loved it. However, I am "stuck" with Cubase because I know my way around Cubase much better (Cubase is cool too and I love it, but I really think Steinberg are cheapasses for limiting the cheap versions of the software so hard -- ~ you want to stem export on Cubase Artist that you bought for £130? Nope. Not a chance. You have to buy the full version for 10.000 bazingas).

About rearranging hotkeys, is that easy? Is there any magic ".exe"-file that does it for you or is it all manual?

This is where knowing the program well comes in handy. You can create key commands and macros for zooming - zoom to selection, zoom to markers, select all + zoom out full(shows whole project with one key press), select all + zoom to one row etc. It's easy to customise the zooming, plus there's a zoom tool.
