which do you think would be more effective tonight... increased physical presence... more police riot shields and all that... more physical confrontations

or the use of rubber bullets/gas ?

obviously consequences of both.... from everything ive read/seen seems you guys are uping police on the streets tonight something fierce but staying away from water/rubber/beanbags
curfew.

i dont think any of the other options will work, itll only make things worse.

rubber bullets will mean real bullets being fired back at the old bill. no one wants to see more people shooting and looting...
don't think a curfew would do much for people who are content on breaking into shit. Isn't a curfew just saying "hey that shit you did last night don't do it or else"

assume that'd be broken instantly... how to react to that is what im asking... if its more riot gear only guess is it'll get more physical ie beatings and such which will have its own huge consequences

Plastic/Rubber bullets killed 14 people (including 9 children) during the riots in Norn Ireland, it's too risky to use them imo. Gas/water cannons I'm fine with, but not rubber/plastic bullets.

if the police start shooting rubber bullets i'm sure a few real bullets would get fired back

It'd scare me off if some Judge Dred looking cops rocked up in one of those!

The only people who will care if the police get really aggressive/use more brutal force are the parents of the kids and hippies...

The general population wants to get their communities back on track.. Bring out those bad ass vans - start battering them and locking em up.

I have been waiting all day to find a shop to get food/cigarettes - haven't eaten in 2 days due to this (woke up late yesterday went to go 24 hour asda, it was being looted so didn't).....

The ripple affect is only in its infancy..

Rubber bullets do kill, just because theyre rubber theyre still going to penetrate your skin at close range arent they.

exactly, so that puts those options out of the question.

curfew, arrest on site anyone breaking said curfew. i reckon it could work. but then again, im just a bloke rolling a joint just out of reach of the madness (not for long so i hear, youts congregating in my local (smalltown) park)
hence why im not in charge!

basically none of us can comment really, thats why were on dsf, and not in the cobra meetings...

by not a murder weapon I'm comparing to an assault rifle... a 9mm can be used to subdue not kill only

9mm vs 45mm from an m-16. Completely different approaches in the form of law enforcement.

Speaking only from military experience if you need to wound and subdue a 9mm round is easily survivable in most areas of the body baring vital organs. Where as 1 shot from an m16 can kill you literally anywhere on the body.

Functionally, in law enforcement, there is little difference between a beretta and an mp5 outside of the mp5's full auto.
Both 9mm and 5.56 which an m16 uses can kill you with one shot, both pretty weak rounds though and thats why theyre used, mainly to incappacitate rather than kill.
A gun is a fucking gun. They all kill relatively easily compared to almost all other weapons (save for, like, bombs and really good poison). They have guns because they can kill people with guns. They probably use MP5s because they look fucking rad and can be carried easily.

They killed this dude with one shot to the chest. All the above nerding out on lethal weaponary is null and void.

Manchester appears to be in flames. Fingers crossed London stays peaceful tonight. There's definitely plenty of police, which is more than can be said for Manchester by the sounds...

haven't you heard, all the MP's are being recalled so they can have a waste of time debate where they don't discuss the underlying issues behind anti social behaviour in this country, rather all try to score points over each other by expressing how shocking it all is
