still it's totally different to sample small bits and pieces from more than one tune to build another at usually different tempo/style, than takin a chord progression from youtube and layering some drums on top, don't you think?

It's the laziest kind of sampling really. Direct source, nothing cut up, modified, altered in anyway. Just drop a break over it, a vocal sample and done. Yes, it was given a "context", but the chords/melody were already done for him and that is the thing people remember about that tune. Just a shame really and it makes you wonder how many of his tracks use the same process.

Also, for those defending him/saying it doesn't matter, I wonder how you'd react if someone sampled Burial - Night Bus in it's entirety, stuck a break over it, and then claimed it for his own, neglecting to mention anything about the original track/artist. Exact same thing.

Did you people get into dance music the other day or something? Example:

Move on.

And Daft Punk credited all samples in their liner notes. You move on and keep defending producers ripping off other producers.

i love when people start drawing the line on what is acceptable and what is not in sampling... if the tune is good it's good. some of our favorite tunes are heavily sampled white labels with no clearance or credit. get off your high horses :H:

dilla anyone? him and 9th wonder use blatant samples and it sounds so sweet imo

At the end of the day, zombys taken a sample from a source most people wouldn't really look at and turned it into something creative and enjoyable to listen to. he hasn't changed it in any way, but hey why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut, he didnt need to chop it up or fuck with it to make a decent piece of music out of it so he didn't bother to. Fair play to him in my opinion.

i didn't see any copyright on the video, so afaik when the OP uploaded to youtube, he basically gave it away. it's not as though he released that on a record.
still i kinda feel like Zomby coulda just played his own pad and it'd be all good.
you can't copyright a chord progression.
you don't know the first thing about copyright

You don't know what dub is

I recall reading an essay my DJ Producer friend Spencer Doran wrote called "The Ethics of the Beat" It addresses the issue of Copyright infringement.
Basically, how sample based music is regarded in the music industry.

IMO, there should be no rules or regulations in how music us used and or abused. After a song is published, it's free for anyone to do whatever they want with it.
DUB as an art form will only be preserved by those who practice it.
If sampling copywritten material makes sample based producers outlaws, only outlaws will make sample based music.
We can't let music and the art of sampling be only in the hands of those who can afford to pay for their samples.
It wasn't until Paul's Boutique that sampling became questionable, in the eyes of the FCC.

He said in an interview that it was a Russian singer...
Ирина Дубцева - О нем (Irina Dubtsyova - O nyom)

around 0:49, 0:54. The two words are "heaven" - "nebo" - and "the abyss" "propact'"

I hear the track like, all the time when I lived in Russia. When I first heard Natalia's song on the Mary Anne Hobbs mix I about lost it.

I think it's awesome that Zomby titled the track "Test Me For A Reason."

Anything is fairgame in sampling.

'Test me for a reason' is a deep emotive piece of music that contributes towards fans feelings for Zomby

Turns out that the 'Soul' of the track was created by someone else

What is wrong isnt the sampling, its the fact that Zomby is percieved as this mysterious guy with deep feelings about life, death and clothing.

Fraudulent Soul.
