some of my mates went there in april, spent the whole holiday having to pay bribes left right and centre, including paying a harbour official to allow them to get off a boat, and paying a security guard to let them back into their hotel.

Also, on the first night, my mate got picked up by some tourist police whilst he was walking back to the hotel, drove to some petrol station miles away, they nicked his cash (about £100 worth) and his camera and kicked him out.

You are bound to get nicked and scammed if you don't speak spanish and don't take action man, but those are some extreme cases. Never really had any problems in Cancun. Argentina, in the other hand... If you don't know your shit, getting a taxi in Buenos Aires can be painful. They leave you 100m away from the destination, hand out fake cash and steal your shit when you are not watching, gotta watch those bastards. Best place for an englishman or a north american in latin america if you don't want to be locked up in a resort colonialism style would be Chile, Uruguai or Costa Rica. Brazil, Argentina and Mexico are a really intense urban experience, not for any tourist I guess.

I thought Cancun was a made up holiday destination for sitcom characters.

It depends. Every major city has rich zones and poor zones. North of the country is way more poor so expect more beggars and unorganized crime. But meh, you are going to be fine, there are some nice hotels if you can afford. Avoid tourist traps and looking like a clueless tourist, get a regular taxi driver, ditch the safari outfit and you won't have to worry You won't have to worry with the whole organized crime thing, they tend to avoid confrontations when big events are happening because they don't want to give an excuse for an invasion or anything like that.
