this one should be special. for many reasons. vancouver's been requesting PINCH for over a year now, and it's finally happening. nuff said. and it'd be tough to think of a better DJ than XI to play right before the man, flying in from toronto especially for this one. on the mic for the night is NATURE BOY - the MC a vibes-heavy dance like this needs. talk about hypnotic dubwise vocal drops, never overtaking the DJ, but filling in the gaps precisely when needed. then you've got the big & bad BIG REDS, storming (well.. more like coasting, warm & easy) in from victoria, eager to show vancouver how they warm things up their side of the georgia straight. and ever since the man's returned from hiatus in barcelona, PHOWA's been a cool fire that people are opening their eyes when they talk about. ..all happening in the same space KODE 9 played for the very first time in 2005. pm me or make sure you're on the lighta! email list for location directions.

saturday, sept 26 @ the secret location. 10pm - late.
$15 before 11pm. $20 after 11pm. tickets available only at the door.

// PINCH tectonic records. bristol.uk

Having brought dubstep music to Bristol in early 2004 with his Context and later Subloaded nights, Rob Ellis aka Pinch worked hard to develop the sound in his home town and the city has flourished as a result of his inputs. Five years on and he can lay claim to the title ‘Bristol’s Godfather of Dubstep’ as he is often daubed by journalists and alike – his original music productions being highly sought after, even finding their way to the silver screen (‘War Dub’ featured in Universal Pictures’ ‘Children Of Men’).

Pinch runs the successful Tectonic imprint, alongside Earwax and looks after Kapsize and Caravan on behalf of artists Joker and October. Starting in 2005 Tectonic quickly grew in reputation to become known as one of the most reliable labels alongside Hyperdub, DMZ and Tempa. Releasing reputed artists such as Loefah, Skream and bringing new signings such as Cyrus and 2562 to the table, Tectonic is also known as the main home for Pinch’s own productions, delivering the widely acclaimed ‘Underwater Dancehall’ LP in late 2007. The LP received huge support from the worlds press receiving 9/10 in Vice, 5/5 in Mixmag and album of the month in DJ Mag – to name a few.

Pinch’s first solo release came in 2006 with ‘Qawwali’ on the highly respected Planet Mu label and received critical acclaim in world press. Boomkat.com, for instance said, “For us, this is the most flawless excursion from Planet Mu to date - and without doubt one of the deepest, most involving and subtle dubstep twelves released in the last 6 years.” http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=20756

Pinch went on to release also acclaimed ‘Punisher’ later that year, as well as ‘Pepper Spray’ in 2007 and ‘Attack Of The Giant Killer Robot Spiders’ earlier this year. Similarly he released leading tracks on Soul Jazz’s Box Of Dub 2 compilation in 2007, with a follow up single in 2008, ‘Chamber Dub’. His productions have received radio plays on many stations across the globe, including regular coverage on BBC Radio One shows such as Mary-Anne Hobbs’ Breezeblock and Rob Da Bank – even providing Radio One with exclusively prepared guest DJ mixes.

As a result of his production skills Pinch has been asked to remix high calibre artists such as Horace Andy & Ashley Beedle (for Berlin based !K7), the great Qawwali vocal legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (who, it is speculated, has sold as many records as Elvis Presley!) courtesy of San Francisco based Six Degrees and London based electro-pop outfit Simean Mobile Disco for Wichita Records.

His reputation has taken him across the globe over the last few years, having played across most of Europe, as well as Russia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and even China (being the 2nd UK dubstep artist ever to be invited to play in China).

Pinch is regarded by his fans and peers alike as one of the main players in dubstep – always pushing boundaries forward both by means of his original productions and in his cutting edge dubplate led DJ sets. http://www.myspace.com/tectonicrecordings

// XI subtrac / lo dubs / aufect. toronto.on

XI is one of the most notable names in canadian dubstep right now. and the reason's why have got little to do with oversized bass wobbly banger immitation. nope. we're talking about actual musicality and a sense of longevity here. and still catering to the heads on the dancefloor, not just the ones leaned up against the wall. ..anyways, that's my take on it for now, until mr. busy-with-my-beard can get a bio together and send my way (~michael). http://www.myspace.com/xidubs

// BIG REDS pacific dubstep. victoria.bc

Big Reds is GOBE, FRAME, and RHYTHMICON - Victoria’s three-man dubstep wrecking crew. The fella's behind PACIFIC DUBSTEP, laying the dubstep foundation down in a big way for the victoria massive. Collectively, they blend the irie dub roots, two step and techno depth, with the all-out dirty face-melting bass smashers. For this night, they're going to warm the place up proper with a two hour set straight before XI. http://pacificdubstep.com

// NATURE BOY pacific dubstep. victoria.bc

Born in Jamaica, flight to Toronto, arriving in victoria. Nature has been residing in the basslines for a long time. With the influences of CHARLEY CHAPLIN, JOSEY WALES, and BRIGADEER JERRY. Lurking within the DrumLine Natureboy injects a conscious lyrical fantastique to make the dancefloor a more intimate space. To quote a lyric “HomeGrown Dub and FreeRange lyrics” when natureboy in the place, its straight bassline science. watch out for his vocal resonating hook shots! http://pacificdubstep.com

// PHOWA sub-osc. vancouver.bc

Phōwa’s work is a fusion of numerous sources of inspiration and sonic pallets yet still maintaining a uniquely enigmatic and personal sensibility. His sense of lo-fi textures and dynamics combine to create deeply immersive atmospheres blended with hypnotic melodic progressions grounded in heavy beats and thick basslines. As a part of SUB-OSC, phōwa has been pushing bass heavy sounds up and down the west coast, appearing along side the likes of SKREAM, LOEFAH, DISTANCE, and BASSNECTAR. He has done remixes for CHEB I SABBAH and the FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON and has licenced music to films such as ‘Scared Sacred’ and ‘The Corporation'.

"The heads" all agreed that PHOWA was one of the best sets of SHAMBHALA this year. the perfect blend of shuffly, dub techno & 2-step cross-over deepness. phowa follows directly after PINCH. http://www.myspace.com/phowa

to anyone that went to 'the woods' and weren't re-directed to 'the secret location', the folks at the woods were suppose to be at their spot all night and be giving directions to the new spot. regardless, my personal apologies for the mix up. please pm me if you were one of the ones that went to 'the woods' that night, i'd to have all my info straight before approaching 'the woods' folks on this.
