#48 after one week out. that's massive considering the rest of the people she's up against.

Yeah, Sov. is definitely making a bit of a commercial impact in the U.S. now, which is more than anybody else in the grime scene can say. The Streets also made a bit of an impression stateside, with decent sales for their first 2 cd's.
Both the Streets and Sov. get radio play, book tours in the U.S., and sell some records here. My only issue with this is that they seem to focus too much on Americanizing their beats and completely eliminating any guest spots for UK mc's. The only guest artist on Public Warning is Missy Elliot.
Anyway, props to Sov for the success. I personally thought the beats on the album were pretty weak, and some of her new lyrics are awfully cheesy, but I'll give her credit for putting the work in. Breaking the U.S. market is next to impossible for UK MC's.

The Streets and Sov seem to cater to the same crowd here in the US, which tends to be <sweeping>the fickle indie/college radio crowd that's always up for a novelty act</sg>. It's highly doubtful that Sov will make anymore of an inroad w/ urban audiences than the Streets or Dizzee were able to.

that's a big negative.
i dont even listen to her myself. cats is pumpin her shit out here in hoodbridge in a serious way. it's a hit out here - it's ghetto fabulous music for ghetto fabulous people. the fellas is bumpin it (and all wanna stick it) and the girls is lovin her.
in fact, i never even heard her until a few weeks ago while chillin at my man chris' house. some chickenheads came over, jumped on his computer, cold rocked it and went bannanas.

making it big in america isnt that hard.
all you have to do is shit out your soul, chew it up and swallow, then reguritate it into a microphone at the most expensive studio you can find.

Sov did do a guest spot on Run the Road Vol 1., and is thus connected to the grime scene. She's also had guest spots on Vertically Challenged and some 12" singles by Jammer, JME, Riko, etc., but judging from the 'new' album, that stuff is all out the window. I do agree she isn't really a grime artist, but she's not really a straight up UK rapper either.
Sov is infinitely more recognizable in the States than Dizzee, Wiley, Lethal B, or any other grime artist. She's got a better record deal than any of them and likely more money. I can't hate her for that, cause we all want to be successful, but I just wish the album was better...

To be fair to lady sov, she is one of the first female grime mc's
She was the typical wannbe mc 13-14 year old on msn during the garage days, dreaming of being the next ms dynamite.
Fast Forward a few years and shes the bigger than ms dynamite has ever and probaly will ever be.

Its a good record for a pop audience.
No grime purists like her(infact they hate her), so there would have been no point even going down the grime route or any route that would have not given her a chance to reach as many people as possible.
When bruzas working at pc world carring your printer to your car and lady sovs winning a grammy, we will know she has made the right choices in her career.
I really think these grimes guys missed there boat 2 years ago.
Maybe lady sov will open a few more doors.

i made the mistake of buying the Vertically Challenged ep for my eight yr old daughter. it was all she would listen to for three months straight.

to say shes grime just cos she was on run the road is dumb IMO cos plan b was on rtr2 and hes not exactly grime is he? i mean, if hes grime, then so is (uk hip hop artist) jehst! sway was on RTR2 as well and his track was blatantly just uk hip hop (they just redid that old dead prez tune). shes just been affiliated with the scene cos she posted up music on ukmusic.com and some garage sites ages ago and she probably thought that would be a better scene to be linked with than uk hip hop (cant blame her). but yeah, shes not a typical grime artist or a typical uk hip hop artist either. good luck to her - shes just done a remix with missy so being on def jam is obviously working out well. shame no one at def jam thought to get anyone else from the grime scene though.
