hey i have recently purchased an oxygen 61 midi controller, and i have never used midi before.
i have been having trouble assigning knobs and sliders and stuff.
i'm using Cubase sx 3
ive read the instructions but i really dont understand much of it
if you could help me out i would be very greatfull

First up, check that your midi controller is recognised by the software. Open up the preferences/options window and select your keyboard from a list for the 'midi in'. (Midid out doesn't matter unless you're using external midi hardware controlled by your DAW). Click 'ok' or 'apply' or whatever.

Most software these days has a midi learn feature. Assigning controls to your midi hardware usually follows the following process.

Right click on the control you want to assign and click on 'assign midi controller (or sometimes just assign CC*). Move the control you want to use on your hardware. The software should now recognise the midi control and assign the software control to the hardware control via 'midi learn'.

That makes it sound simple. Try google/cubase forums.

If that doesn't work (most of my plugins don't have midi learn), you need to go to device setup, and add a new device. It should say "Generic Remote" from here you can setup Cubase to read the dials/faders/whatever on your controller and then assign them to a plugin parameter. It's kind of a pain in the ass and pretty archaic to be honest; in Cubase 4 they added "Quick Controls," which gave you 8 assignable knobs to any plugin at any time accessible immediately on the left of the arrange window. Other than being able to choose which channels of a multi-channel plugin you want active, it's the only feature I wish was in SX3.
