A NIGHT OF CRAZY FROM REGGAES MOST SANE MADMAN THE UPSETTER - . LEE PERRY AT THE CONTROLS LIVE IN CONCERT

Lee “Scratch” Perry is a living legend in reggae music. Perry enjoyed his first taste of UK chart success with Val Bennett’s “Return to Django” in 1969. It was around this time he began producing the Wailers on a series of recordings which included “Small Axe”, “Duppy Conqueror” and “Soul Rebel” which are now considered to be their finest work. Famous for his dub cuts from his studio, “The Ark” he also worked with the Clash producing “Complete Control”.

The Upsetter, the man Bob Marley described as “a genius”, as a producer, arranger and writer he is one of the architects of reggae. He is ranked alongside Duke Ellington and Miles Davis as a true genius of 20th century music.

Coincidentally I bought his autobiography on Monday before I found out about the gig!!

Lee Perry in a minute:

* Alter egos include The Upsetter, Scratch, Pipecock Jackxon, Super Ape and Small Axe (real name - Rainford Hugh Perry)

* Cut his first record in 1959

* Threatened to kill Bob Marley after Bob nicked his backing band (they made it up though)

* Perry's Upsetters were one of the first reggae acts to tour the UK

* Spent three days in prison for allegedly burning his Black Ark studio to the ground in 1981

* Put a curse on the BBC that can never be undone till Perry's records are played round the clock

* Collaborated with cosmic Scots folkie John Martyn on a track called "Big Muff", reputedly about a fuzz pedal.

* Thinks Battenburg isn't colourful enough

And has also claimed to come from Jupiter and be born in mid air. This probably has something to do with the reason last nights gig was cancelled!

I think that's a 2 in 5 strike rate now, seen him twice, three times no show. Ah well, I was at least home in time to hear Rockaway on SubFM play some amazing recorded interview with haile Selassie!

Next opportunity to buy tickets for a cancelled event is now May 2007 :D

i'm (hopefully) going to the brighton one, 3rd december.
i'm not expecting much, he's notoriously "unreliable," lately, but i have to see anyway.
i might just post the man 20 quid and stay in.
he deserves it.

Lol - yeah, I didn't even think about the money being refunded for the same reason but Ticketweb just gave it back! I am a litle way through his biog and the man is way way more legend than I realised!! If you want it after me to read then holla.
