question for the ableton heads

So I'm at the point where I'm getting booked for enough live gigs that I want to pay money for this product like I should. What happened before was that a friend bought it years ago (Version 6), insisted I try it out and let me borrow it. I didn't start doing live stuff until last year, and that's when I started getting into it for that purpose. I recently reformatted my hard drive, and rather than borrow it again or download some shady version, I wanna buy it. I have a few questions about it, though:

1. I see on their website that I can only buy Version 8, but I'd rather have 6 or 7, since the computer I'm using it on is a bit old, and since I'm not using it for production, I wouldn't be using a good portion of the features. Basically, I like the setup I have now. Is there a way I can buy the older versions? Or any place that sells them? I see that you can download them from the Ableton website, but I'm hoping I can get it cheaper since I really don't need 8 for anything yet.

2. The website mentions that in Live 7 LE, you can only have 12 audio effects, but they don't really elaborate- is that 12 different audio effects, 12 instances of audio effects, or 12 audio effects turned on? It's super annoying, since the LE version seems to do everything I need, except my current setup is using 13 instances of Ableton audio effects...

Thanks in advance! This board seems pretty big on Ableton, so I figured you would be pretty knowledgeable about this stuff.

why don't you d/l the ableton 8 demo - you can use it unrestricted for 14 days and see how it runs!

You should be able to pick up 7 on ebay or from shops e.g. DV247 or Dolphin

Not sure about the LE

Yeah I might try that...I just figure the older programs are going to run a bit better on an old computer.

I guess I should've asked where I can buy Live 7 with a student discount, since I'm a student and should take advantage of that. Surprisingly, there isn't one copy of Live 7 on Ebay, dunno what's up with that.

Yeah, that's the LE version though...I have a feeling I won't be able to do what I need with that one. I didn't see any regular versions of Live 7 on there...thanks for checking, though.

don't waste your time with 7. use or find a student id to buy 8 with the student discount. like 300 bucks or so... pretty solid price.

Haha, like I said I AM a student...but because I'm a student, even $270 is a lot when I'm barely scraping by. The reason I want 7 is that I don't use it for production, am happy with my current live set, and don't want to learn new software just to get back to where I was...I don't mind upgrading in the future if I see a need to.

Okay, what is the cost to upgrade from an LE version?

I think Le came with my MPK, I'm also an artist, whatever that means, how much would that cost?

I'm looking at their website, but f'ed if I can find an artist discount, or the cost to upgrade.

Also, whats the difference between live and suite? Does suite come with more samples, more instruments? What the dealio? Is it worth it?

Thanks but they don't have 7, and their price for 8 is $10 more than from the official Ableton website.

Well, at least the Live 8 demo I downloaded runs much smoother on my old Mac than my Live lite 7. It loads all the instruments and presets much faster and the CPU load meter barely moves...
