Who suffers from tinnitus on here? Not like just when you come back from a gig or something, but Permenantly...
I've had mine for about 3 years now and it died down quite a bit for a while but past few days it's suddenly became noticable again and i haven't even been exposed to high volume levels.

I've heard about musicians and producers giving up their careers in music because of this condition and I wondered if anyone here also knows how good a decent set of earplugs are.
I have been wearing plugs at gigs since I got tinnitus and have been seriously thinking about getting a good pair that are reusable and will last.

There was a thread on here a good while back about it.

I WILL NOT GO to a gig of any genre of music without earplugs, I use Quies natural wax earplugs all of the time.

I can't recommend them enough, I am very aware of my hearing and the damage that can be done to it. Reasonably cheap too and you should be able to find them in most chemists/pharmacies. We only have one set of ears make sure you look after them.

Out of interest were you actually diagnosed with Tinnitus or did you decide you have it? I read some thing about it a while back about it being, in some cases, more of a psychological condition... I'll try to find the article for you.

I went to the docs about 2 and half yeasr ago and he said there was nothing noticeably wrong with my ears and just said it must have been too much loud music, but he didn't actually diagnose me with it, no. So I've just been deciding I have it, but I also heard something about it being psychological and can also be linked to stress and anxiety, which admittedly I do get quite a bit. So yeah I'm not too sure if I have actually got it physically or if it is some psychological thing...

Either way, make sure you keep your ears protected

Now, I don't know if you produce on headphones or monitors... A while back someone sent me music via AIM, it was so loud I had to turn my amp down to about 6 normally its at 48/50. That kid produced at an unbelievable volume level. He will be deaf before he knows it. Headphones can do serious damage too, keep an ear on levels when producing on them too.

Yeah man these days I tend to keep volume to a good level when producing. Not too low that you can't hear everything, but not loud either. I've always used monitors for producing with, but yeah I heard headphoens can do quite a bit of damage if too loud.
It's weird to think that the decibels measured from the volume of how some people listen to their ipod are equal to being stood next to a pneumatic drill without ear protection. Really shocking.
I really want to start DJing but I dont know if this will get in the way of it, especially if wearing ear plugs when mixing in the next track with headphones.

Ear protection is well important, unless you only want to be able to enjoy listening to and playing music for a few years before burning them out... I reckon that'd suck

I've tried a few different earplugs before, and even a cheap pair will do the job, but you may find they dull the sound and can be uncomfortable to wear for an entire evening. Etymotic ER-20's (about £15, I think) are pretty good and def worth trying before you spend loads!

I get this wierd tinitus that sounds more like a subby kick drum in my ear.

Wasnt sure it was tinitus at first as would expect to hear a wine or whistle.

Horrible when it happens, every sound you hear gets layered with this thuddy 'kick' noise, thankfully doesn't happen often..

I have it, it's fucking horrible.

it was worse when i first got it, i was really ill at the time and my sinuses were blocked up and the ringing was soooo loud i was almost having a breakdown thinking it would be like that for the rest of my life!

now it's either gotten quieter or i've gotten used to it, anyway... wear protection!

Going off how crap Thanet metal bands are, how much that soundsystem in Westcoast gets abused and how every sound engineer round here besides Big Chris and Beau can't run a PA properly , I'm not surprised!

got it at 3200hz. And pretty loud. Set up a test tone at 3200hz turn up the volume so u just start to have a little trouble distinguishing words when someone is speaking to u. Now live like that for the rest of ur fucking life.

Try it kids, then decide if u need ear protection or not.

I have had it since I was pretty young. Maybe 16 or so. I am sure it partially has to do with loud music. Was in some noisy bands when I was younger but my ears get infected at least once a year and I have no health insurance. I am sure that has done more damage than anything. I do have trouble understanding speech clearly when other sounds are going on. Don't even try to talk to me at the bar lol. I have gotten used to it tho and it doesn't seem to be getting any worse. I wear ear muffs at work because I work with loud machines and I don't go out much but when I do I usually stay as far away from the PA as possible. I can still hear the freq range pretty well I think. If anything it makes me concentrate on getting clean and clear mixdowns because when sounds are out of place it really bothers me. I dunno you deal with it but I would def recommend being conscious of what you are doing to your ears at all times. The longer you can put off getting it, the better. As a music lover tho it is tough to avoid high spl all together.

I have a very hard time hearing high hats in a mix, specially garagey hh's. I can hear them, I just can't tell where they are in the beat, like exactly.

That's fucked, You get all the intelligebility of the voice from around 1-3 k, I feel for you man

I treasure mine it's up round near 10k at least and only really hear it if my ears have been worn out and everything else is really quiet. Think that was just from rock gigs where the guitarists continually turn up their amps on stage to "sound better" / "put the whole mix out of balance and destroy everyones ears with their top end from the distortion"

do you have any problems with dubstep one? or just high hats in generally cuz of where it lays within the freq range?

How would you wear plugs when your djing? cuz thats one place where your ears could get damaged

I thought mine where really bad but maybe not. I have AKG702 and I can hear that extension of the highs over my monitors range very clearly. Never really tested it specifically but maybe I will now.
