I think you mean high pass filter :)

low pass = cutoff high frequencies
high pass = cutoff low frequencies

Think in curves of EQ, that's basically what a filter is. Use it accordingly and you'll be fiiiiiiine :)
Trust your ears over all well-meant advice!

low pass - less top end
-Can make sounds more dull
-Can be used to place sounds in the background (pads, backing vox)
-Can be used for isolation of drums e.g taking cymbals out from a kick drum sample (this will change the sound of the kick though)

high pass - less bottom end
-Bottom end can build up if there is a lot of it in each instrument in the mix, can be used to clean up the mix a bit
-Can be used to remove some of the weight from certain instruments e.g hihats, cymbals to again give space to other elements in the mix
- Can be used on vocals to fight proximity effect or just to create more space in the mix for the bassier instruments. (I like to use this on lead instruments in general)

Don't use them for the sake of it, as macc pointed out in another thread using filters can alter the audio in other areas than where you set it to effect.

Try it out, listen to what it sounds like, if it works go with it, if not try something else
