I have been a big Reason user, and recently switched to Ableton live 8. I changed because i wanted to use VST's such as Albino.
I really can't get to grips with Ableton at all, and i find it strangely difficult to use. Even with rewiring Reason into it i just do not like it.
I'm thinking of buying Logic, as i think it looks clean and easier as well as being able to use VST's.
What do you people think =).

Most synths and plugs out there come with a .AU format.

Im sure there is some free software on apple site called VFX or something that allows you to load VST's on a mac/logic.

Live has some pluses and some minuses. Have you read computer music's ableton special edition? I've been intensely studying ableton, and it didn't contain anything I hadn't learned in about a week and a half, but still you might find it helpful to understand what is so unique and powerful about ableton. But if you don't want to perform live, dj, or improvisationally arrange your tracks, live is not the software for u. Logic probably would be better.

Have a friend show you Ableton. Most people I know who have switched to Ableton couldn't get into it until they worked with someone using it.

I think I've got a pretty good handle on live, there is still a lot that I don't know, but most of its shortcuts and such, but ableton is lacking in many standard daw departments. That's just plain to see if you're coming from another daw.

Really if ur not into live performance or jamming with your daw, other daws have more to offer.

Logic is pretty hard to get into.
Cubase is nice but it's really intimidating at first.
Once you write a tune in it you'll fall in love.

I went from Reason to Live, took me 3 or 4 attempts (over the space of about 2 weeks) but once i began to understand how Live works compared to Reason i began to see how much more i can do with it.

Is there anything inparticular you're stuggling with?

I went to Ableton from ACID (and FL/Logic before that)....it took me a few hours to get "the basics" down, but stuff like "follow actions/dummy clips, etc" and the more interesting stuff I've been using more in the past 3 months or so.

learning the shortcuts makes is another thing. I can't imagine mousing around 100% in ableton like I used to.

but yeah like pendaz said, what are you having problems with specifically?

I didn't find that true at all. I went from Cakewalk (now Sonar) to Cubase to Logic to... Ableton. I've used it for hip-hop (production and recording), rock, and commercial work. It worked great for all of these.

What did you find lacking?

Practice a few years in Ableton, FL or Logic and move to Renoise when you and the world are ready for it.

Ha, I should have included that I spent 4+ years using nothing but buzz tracker. Yes, Ableton does not compare!

use whatever your workflow is the fastest and makes the most sense in. it's not the tools that make the artist, but the end result

I went from Reason 4 to Live, took me a few weeks but when I was used to the flow of Live, it was the best decision I made. And if I still like rinsing it out on reason I can always ReWire, which again, you get used to.
