Im new to making music, does anyone know the sound I want? I need a plug in but im not sure what this effect is really called.. can I add a high pass filter after delay and automate it to go up or is there a plugin that can do that for me? king tubby's delays sound so sweet.

Look for Analogic Delay, Bionic Delay and Tape Delay. I think they are all free and will suit your needs.

It's called a Roland Space Echo, and it's a vintage delay unit that's much sought after. The thunderclap sounds you hear in some Tubby dubs is him physically picking up and dropping it...

...and while there are plugins that are supposed to emulate the sound of a Space Echo, none of them really come close because it has its own sound properties (like saturation & analog hiss) that IMHO just can't be modelled accurately yet. And believe me, I've tried.

man o man someone took really piss-poor care of their re501. what a sad sight.

you can generate tape-ish delays just by bandpassing the signal and distorting it (try a transistor-style overdrive). most of the distortion in tape delay comes from overdriving the input circuit, which is really sensitive on roland space echo's, rather than the tape itself. either way it just darkens up the delay and makes it smoother.

the real non-linearities of tempo sync, tho, are up to you.

i dunno what DAW you are on but you can make a true feed back delay that will be closer to what you want

what you need is to put the delay on the send channel dry 0 wet 100 and feedback on a midi knob or quick control (cause its gonna get nasty otherwise) and then you send that channel INTO ITSELF

so
plugin----delay channel-----delay channel-----delay channel-----delay channel-----delay channel-----etc
it goes on a true feedback loop

you then send that channel to another channel so you have volume control, and throw a limiter on there as well so you dont kill yourself with feedback

if you put effects or filters on the delay channel the sound will morph slightly every time it feeds back into itself

The UAD Space Echo plugin is exact emulation, about as close as one can get anyway. Although it's about the same price since you also need a UAD card to run it.

Try Fab Filter's timeless. Demo'ed very briefly.

Once built a a space echo type thing in fl's mixer, was truly tubby worthy, 4 or 5 lfo's controlling various things - freqs going in, coming out, rates delay, really got a very springy sound out of it. Just find a spring somewhere, pluck it, watch the vibrations, watch the lfo's at work. I'm not blowing smoke.

I think I know what you mean but is there any chance we could get an audio example of the effect you are after?

therses a pritty good emulation of the space echo on the reaktor user library if you use that. never going to be as good as the real thing but it does the job.

dub station is also a good dubby delay but its hard to get the splashy king tubby sound out of it. still its in permanent use in my set up just coz its so usable.

I can easily recommend the Bionic Delay for this. It's free!

for delay fabfilter timeless and ohmforce ohmboyz can both knock out some quite dubby sounding results.

for reverb, sprink tank in reaktor is about as close as you'll get to a real spring except for possibly convolution.

Never heard a convolution spring verb, how do they sound. Seems like something convolution couldn't do, the spring being so extraordinarily organic.
