and I'm not dissing it either I love it!
It's like a showcase of how many tones one can get from fm synthesis. so you have like 2 parts of the bass line.
1. the sub (basic sinewave) this can be seperate if you want, like an octave down from the wobble.
2. lower-midrange wobble. the wobbles will always be like an LFO'd filter (any type of filter not just LPF) but the tones to start with is what interests me. - i do it my making my metalic tone on that FM 8 plugin, then copy the plugin & its patch about 5 times, then for each one I set different FM-matrix settings to get different metalic sounds, some sound clangy some are more zzzziiithy some are very hollow sounding.
and then of course setting different LFO/wobble rates for each patch, I usually sync it to the DAWs B.P.M. as that seems to be the trend these days.
my other tip as what you do after, you can get some really growly sounds just by creating an FX bus of distortions, short reverbs, and ringmods, obviously not too heavy on the ringmod even if it's rindmodding the wet signal of the reverb. very fearsome souund!

FM8 is an incredible synth. just got it very recently and am just beginning to explore the possibilites. i never liked massive so i was suprised at how much i like the FM8.
i love that metallic sound your talking about. i also use Operator for the same sort of effect. also very dope sounding and easy to use.

yep that's a good example
even Bar9 murdersound too.
it's easy to get metalic wobbles with just FM8 and renoise's 'razor' distortion plugin alone, you just have to know what you're doing and if you know how to use the fm-matrix in fm8 from the initalise sine patch then you're laughing.
metallic wobbles for the win!

awesome.
clipz started the whole FM thing in his very unaceptable jumpup music, I've heard some bad comments about these sorts of basslines, comments like - sounds like a bored schoolboy twangy his wooden ruler at the desk.

if you have ableton, there are amazing tutorials on how to milk Operator for all its worth. They really make it simple with Operator, its the first FM synth i really learned from the inside out and it keeps benefiting me time and time again
just please people....
FM does not mean only harsh jump up sounds. Some of the most pleasing pads and strings ive designed were with FM

Just the basics of FM, but I found this pretty useful for starters:

to be honest i don't understand it enough to know what sound will come next if I do X and Y, this is what's so fun with composing sounds on FM synths, it's all trial and error, if it sounds good you use it, if not you change something and hope for a better sound.

a bit heady but for ppl who love modulation, it should be easy to grasp after a night or two of fucking around. fm synthesis is my fav style. and i am still learning it. but the sounds are so vast!!

i use ableton, but unfortunately i don't have operator... rather FM8. (damn you student copy of ableton#!@#

) i suppose the basics of how the FM matrix works should carry over, however?
i've seen you cite your admiration for operator before... perhaps it is worth the $?

you can get nasty sounds out of operator. or sweet risers. or explosion sound fx. or beautiful pads. or angelic bells. or ufo effects. its really quite versatile. and compared to fm8, alot easier to understand. i use both. if u do not have the suite of live - i would recommend buying operator and sampler. those 2 are integrated nicely with ableton and are wonderful tools. go into your preferences and turn demo on to try those 2 tools out. it will disable save, but u can get to play around with them before handing over hard earned scratch. if you do buy them, and need some resources:
http://nickstutorials.com/products/soun ... e-operator
(i am not affiliated with that dude, he just puts out some knowledgeable tutorials.)
cheers.

amen to this
have never used FM8 myself, but a couple months ago when i started getting into dubstep like rusko and stuff, i've been using operator to make some GRIMY ass stuff. there's just so many crazy harmonics that jump out when you mess with the coarse tuning knobs.. i use a 2 pole LP filter to make it wobble and it starts getting grimy. and if you put a triangle or sine in, you get nice subbass... i like to modulate random paramters to see what happens

honeslty you don't need to know anything about FM, just get a plug and start playing around.

u can also just put a delay on and put it like a centimeter from the fastest delay setting possible. this is a fast way to get metalic wobble.

fm synthesis fucks my head rite up man, if anyone has got like a dummys guide that would be cool,
it seems that the sounds you can get through fm are more varied than in subtractive, i mite be totally wrong still,

there is no dummies guide
if you can find in print or pdf (may still have) there is the orig dx7 manual with is like 500 pages and supplemental pages on math
otherwise messabout with presets or from scratch
