Bit of help

Hey, was just wondering if someone could help us out with this or simply point us in the direction of a thread on it already. Basically I am really getting into this experimental hip hop, dare I say wonky sound, and was just wondering what are the good LP’s to start with as say an introduction to the sound. (Similar to how Skream and Benga’s LP’s are good places to start with dubstep, alongside others of course).

I know a few producers such as Hudson Mohawke and Flying Lotus but that’s about it unfortunately :(

Any help is much appreciated,

Thanks :)

Samiyam - Rap Beats Vol 1

would be a good place to start.

and also check out these mans:

Jneiro Janel a.k.a Dr. Who Dat?
Dabrye
Madlib (I figured you know)
Afta-1

but let's talk about Samiyam for a minute. I'm listening to some of the recent Sam shit today...Swamp Tarts, Roller Skates, some randoms, the Samiyam/Zomby Mix....and I found it interesting this pseudo video game synth sound he's been on for awhile. Nearly all of Rap Beats Vol. 1 is not on that tip at all...but the roots are there. Wrap Up, Super Chronzio Bros 2 and maybe one other tune are the only signs of that sound.

Then Return EP and other shit comes about and it's almost like he sat back with RB Vol. 1 and was like "those two beats right there are how I wanna take my sound...time to milk that for what it's worth".

I wonder where he's gonna take his sound next.

Anyway...just rambling :)

i don't think he "sat back" or just started doing the same thing over and over - he's just always made raw sp303 beats. the machine just has that sound to it. it's nasty. he's made raw beats since Catch Me Riding Dirty, Fireball and all those early ones, onwards. he has a sound.

yes, yes he has

i'm just saying it's more evident now more than it was on rap beats vol. 1

i would say a good place to start would be :

Illum Sphere - incoming ep
Hudson Mohawke - Butter / Oops ep / Hudsons heaters
Rustie - jagz the smack ep
Flying Lotus - Reset ep / los angeles / 1983
Ras G - Brother from another planet
Fulgeance - Smartbanging ep
Mr Oizo - analogue worms attack
Danny Breaks - another dimension
Nosaj thing - drift
Bullion - get lifted
Paul white - the strange dreams of
Dorian concept - when planets explode
Dabrye - one/one & one/two
daedelus - denies the days demise

try that lot, you can probably download most of it, but please but it as most these guys earn fuck all off music sales and the scene really needs support from people where it can to keep the good music flowing

P2P is great for auditioning tracks as they're meant to be heard, I buy tons of music but I'm never buy anything after hearing nothing but a 30 second sample at 40kbps... As long as I'm not ripping anyone off, file sharing is a great resource, then I buy the gear from artists who are worth supporting
