Soundcloud compression

I finished a tune last night and decided to put it on soundcloud. In Audacity the file had dynamics and all that.

in soundcloud it's a straight block. this is normal right?

I wouldn't judge anything by how it looks on soundcloud, it's completely irrelevant/inaccurate visually :)

From their site:

"In order for users to hear music rapidly on the SC platform, we re-encode every track to high quality 128 kbps Mp3s. However, if you make your file « downloadable », then the users who have access to it will be able to download the original file (whether it’s Aiff, Wav or Mp3)."

I'm coding something for a web app that generates waveforms like they do, and there is no way to do it 100% true, just a rough estimate so I wouldn't trust theirs too much.

still a great idea!

didn't know though, that just a 128kbps version can be heard although you uploaded a wave!

that explains a lot.

LOL no bitching was popping off. just something I noticed.

yes it's superior to soundclick, reverbnation and all the rest.

I need to get more talkative with some of these soundcloud heads. on a msg board I can ramble on no problem. once it becomes one on one online I'm thinking 'this is bizarre'
