When you guys start a remix whats the first thing you do?

I always start remixes by sampling some of the leads and bass out of the tune then making some drums. However this never seems to work and everything just becomes a bit floppy. I also struggle and keeping the original feel of the song and it seems to go off on a tangent.

So whats your tips and tricks?

I usually drag all the stems onto Cubase and listen to the track...

I start to solo bits as I go along and pick up how I want my remix to sound..

I chop up the best bits - wack them in the remixes/projectname/choppedsamples folder

then start a new project load the samples up / process - then put them into the general structure and then start building my remix..

In general I use about 30-40% of the stems so its still using parts of the orignal track.

I often try and use a different BPM just so i don't just make the original with new sounds.

What I would like to start seeing in stem packs I get from people is midi of the melodies and pads.

It'll make everyones life easier if you can reference what key its in, spesh if the person don't know themselfs haha

I'll just put that out there for people who give stems out a lot - ive started doing this and people are very greatful

u dont really want ur remix to be a carbon copy of the original with a different snare / sub sample anyway do u...

did about 13 remixes in the past year; if you're moving across genres, styles, re-pitching, etc, quite often the only thing i'll keep is the vox and maybe some fx if they're awesome.

if there's a ton of cool percussion in the orig, i might either take sections of it or build a kit out of funky bits.

i won't throw away the leads outright-- sometimes you hear back from the artist/management that they want more of the original flavor in the piece--but in general, i figure, if they want a remix, they want a brand-new take on the piece.

stems come from the artist/label/management.

Generally this - its quite hard to find stems floating around on the internet unless its remix competitions or something

well you can try and find a high quality version of it and try and find bits what are easy to chop up (like not many instruments playing) or just grab the accapella and make a new beat for it but I barely call that a remix, personally unless its very very different.

Yeah was checking for an acappella but had no luck. I'l see what I can do. after all i do have over a month lol

this would be veeeeery interesting! i tried doing some remixes but its fairly hard to do in renoise.....

just wondering what sort of style would you have gone for?

I would have wanted a dubstep remix of it. But It seems to be very tricky lol

Haha I wouldnt like to be waiting on them in the post atm lol. Yeah cool

snag the acapella and instrumental if avail
midi file dl and split it up
then go to work with all i have and can find from orig and give my own twist

Sweet got the midi file never thought of getting that cheers

While we're on the subject of remixing n' things, If i were to recreate (im not sure remix is the right word in this case) an original song, using a sample from a remix of that song. (In this case, The Klaxons it's not over, skreams remix, lead synth), What would I be doing? Oo


Remixing skream?. >.<




(Yes I know its skream and the klaxons, but I like the song and it really does fit well into dubstep)
