im planning to get some second hand technics and a mixer soon, i wanna set serato up but from what i can see on the serato site it seems to be about £500 just to set it up.. even though the software is free. does anyone know if this is actually how much it costs to set it up? cos in theory the sooner i get it the cheaper i can get tunes to play cos i wont have to buy vinyl every time i want to play a track. does anyone use DJ software setup which didnt cost about a grand?

my mates serato box was about £400 i think, works fine. seems pretty simple to set up.

lucky fuckers girlfriend got it for his birthday. hes on to a winner there i think. shes a hottie too.

Get Traktor Duo, it does the same thing as Serato, has better/more features, and sounds better IMO. But best of all its about $200 less than Serato.

I've never tried Serrato or Traktor, but I've been DJing with Connectiv's Torq for over a year now and I've never had it crash or spaz out... I even run it on a netbook. I've met some people who are pretty snobbish and as far as they're concerned, if you're not using Serrato then you're noone, but to be honest I really can't knock Torq for about £160. Even if it is worse sound quality and less responsive (it's good enough that I can't tell if it is), then it was worth it for me purely for the fact that it reopened the door to 'vinyl' DJing again without lugging about a ton of vinyl and spending £8 a piece on wax.

I'm not sure about Leeds, but there must be a shop somewhere up there which stocks it and will let you have a play on it if you ask nicely

that sounds like a nice option... does anyone else have experience of it? ima have a look into this cos i cant afford £900 for another option at all... times are hard haha (and i want to buy propellerheads record at some point )

Yeah, for the cash you get the soundcard that plugs into your decks, the software, a set of 2 timecoded vinyls, and a set of 2 timecoded CDs too. I just did a quick google search and the lowest I could find is for about £150 (maybe delivery is extra), although if you hang about on ebay for a bit, you could potentially pick it up second hand for a few quid cheaper.

I'd be interested in what others have to say about Torq too who have also used Serrato/Traktor and compare the software.

I got two techs and a vestax mixer ( all used) and serato (new) from long and maquade for $1900.00 Canadian.

Traktor duo, traktor pro and Intimidation touch are all cheaper alternatives, I think theres more than that (the one the guy earlier mentioned) but yeah it's a good investment it's what I'm going for

Duo is a slimmed down version of Pro, giving you 2 decks + 3 effects per deck + looping on each deck. With Serato you just get them decks and sample player.

you can play up to 8 tracks at a time with scratchlive 1 1.9+. its got an autolooper although admittedly i have issues with the autobpm algorithm, the aftercare is also shit hot compared to say, mixvibes. i'm quite happy with it though i'm on the verge of switching up to sl3

try out NI shit, audio 8 interface or even final scratch ( which i use because of the midi luv ), traktor is a beast tho
