This just in... vinyl is dead. Officially.

The DJing community and the greater dance music scene mourns the loss of a clubbing staple today. No, Steve Aoki hasn’t hung up his record bag, but rather news has emerged that iconic turntable manufacturers Technics will be stopping production on their universally loved Technics 1200s and Technics 1210s.

In a statement re-posted on dance board Global Hardstyle, the company behind the production of the Technics turntables Panasonic announced that they would cease the manufacture of Tehcnics turntables in February next year, citing an increasing decline in sales as the motivation behind the line’s demise.

The Australian arm of Panasonic issued a similar statement today, expressing their disappointment that the brand’s 35 years-and-running legacy was to be put to bed.

“It is a sad day today but due to low sales globally in analogue turntables a decision to stop production has been made on Technics Turntables,” Panasonic spokesman Ian North explained. “For Australia this means we will receive our last shipment in March.”

With the disappearance of Technics decks now imminent it’s becoming increasingly clear that the digital juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing down. We’ve already heard from trance icon Tiesto how he’s abandoned the ‘outdated’ medium in favour and gone for the ease and accessibility of digital tune libraries. Indeed, the new (and might we just say super-sexy) CDJ-2000s from Pioneer look to be making things easier than ever before with USB stick functionality, employed just last weekend by another digital convert Sasha.

Whilst we’re sure the classic Technics turntables will live on in the hearts of many club-reverent folk out there – not to mention in more than a few purist clubs – it’s still a crushing blow to lose the decks, and if nobody minds, we’ll be bringing beer o’clock around early this Friday afternoon.

Maybe they should blame the fact that techs are old school technology and nearly indestructible. What does get worn on them is user replaceable. It is why it is the one piece of gear you will every buy that is worth every penny you paid for it. I just hope they keep making parts. The ones I own are 10/15 years old and will probably last me the rest of my life as long as I can still fix em. Big up teh techs! And oh yeah they still get a lot of use in my digital set up!

Does this mean vinyl is dead though? no in fact i have read news articles that say vinyl sales are up from previous years :)
Not in dance music. Give it a few years and vinyl will only be for audiophiles and indie rockers. I only buy antique vinyl which is already out there anyway so I don't give a shit. We just need one pressing plant left to make control vinyl

there's people that want vinyl dead. trust me. look at the thread title of this FFS. fuck off!

this current technics thing applies to australia/nz and ireland right now. the uk isn't mentioned or europe or north america for that matter. there's no official statement on any of the other global panasonic sites. we don't know anything yet about the global situation, so once again..the war on vinyl and their fucking hype merchants...

i beleve there is only one plant that makes them so they either make em or they dont. in the internet age it doesnt matter what part of the world they are available in u can get them if they make em. I dunno if it is tru but I have heard this before an it wouldnt surprise me because panasonic is a huge company and they dont make dick off these things compared to other shit they slang. any time they make a run of decks they have to retool an entire factory. imo its not the end of the world if they do call it quits, there are enough around the world u shud always be able to find a used pair somewheres.

Seckle, I don't want vinyl dead. Far from it. I said it tongue in cheek but any humor and subtext would be lost to you on the internet. Cry me a fucking river.
