real dubstep before chase & status?

ok so i'm on the slot before chase & status at a commercial venue

if i play a deep dmz style kinda set will the crowd get it? would be mint to educate but this genre has hit a different direction with those guys pretty much leading it towards pop...

maybe meet in the middle somewhere since the event has been plugged to a liquid crowd that know c & s from the radio?

thoughts?

You'd strggle with a commercial crowd play the deeper stuff I reckon. I'd prob play some of the remixes which Joker/Skream/Rusko have done recently then test the waters with a couple of deeper tunes.

yeah hench and skream stuff could be the best way to bridge it.

dunno if i can bring myself to play rusko anymore. used to double drop that stuff all the time but like to think my taste has grown away from the high impact low life span stuff.

it sucks that you feel the need to play what the crowd wants to hear. Ok, granted that you cant just play your own stuff so no-one enjoys it but DJing is like a 2 way thing. you should be play what you feeling at the time, then vibe off their reactions.

i reckon u should play a lil bit of the commercial stuff just to please the masses, but what ever you are feeling really..
Probs could drop some DMZ - blue notez!! :D
and i reckon some joker will be much appreciated.

hope that helps

Yeah bit of Joker, Gemmy, Mensah, a few remixes of well known stuff then work it up to Skream, Jakes style and end your set with Snoop Dog Millionaire..

At the end of the day, the key to playing a good warm up set is to represent what you're about without scaring people off.

I'd suggest mixing it up and seeing what reactions you get.

Drop some DMZ about 15 mins in, see how it goes down. Mix it up with some Rusko / Joker / Skream - make sure you got some vocal stuff you don't want to scare the shit out of the ladies who don't really know what they're there for.

You got to give people a chance to warm to the sound. Don't hit them with the deepest set you could play cos they won't get it 90% of the time. You don't want to dead yourself from future opportunities of warming up for other big acts passin thru your area.

Keep people moving and you'll keep the promoters happy, thus earning you more bookings, in turn earning you more rep, which in time will allow you more freedom with your DJ sets.

One key rule when warming up is not to play any Chase & Status tracks - after all that is what they've been booked to do!! Nothing worse than the warm up DJ playing your own tunes!!

Not sure I heard it!!

Just have a good set and get people moving, you don't need to smash the fuck out of it or be the opposite and be completely pretentious playing only what you consider to be "educating" people.

Playing a set of stuff you think commercial heads "need" to be listening to is probably one of the worst things a lot of warm up DJ's do for the more commercial acts - they aint going to educate anyone in the long run, they are just being detrimental to their own careers. You got to mix it up and let people in at the shallow end.

If you're warming up for a dub act however, then by all means GO DEEP!!!

I am beginning to sound preachy now, but I've seen a lot of warm up DJ's struggle infinitely and it's quite painful to watch. I remember being the warm up DJ, and still do warm up for some people now - its all about knowing your audience and knowing your place, be true to yourself but don't ever think you know whats best for them - let their reactions guide you thru your sets and you'll go far in them warm up slots.

I warmed up for Chase & Status last month here in Liverpool. I was probably a bit more fortunate in that I did almost lthe full 3 hours from 10pm-12.45am before they came on at 1am, so I played a lot of Uk Funky the first hour while it filled up, played an hour of Future Garage and Deeper stuff with a lot of Untold, Gemmy, Brackles etc between 11-12, and then at 12 went all Brostep and Wobbly. Unsurprisingly the last 45 minutes is when the venue nearly broke due to it going off so much but the venue was still full and dancing from about 10.30pm. If anything, playing the deeper and non wobble stuff just built the anticipation and made it go off even more when I started laying it down. Again Im fortunate in that I love and play all styles of Dubstep so can diversify quite quickly. My only advice would be to not do your head in over it and just play what you want to play and mix it up a little bit, it sounds like you like a bit of everything anyway so just play a bit of everything. And yeah, dont play any Chase & Status tunes!

Play what you want, standard.

Stick to what you believe in, dont bother playing stuff you're not going to enjoy, cause then it becomes a chore.

Really good tips there from plastician, I'm just moving away from preplanned sets now and am gonna be trying to choose the next tune based on the situation not because It's an easy tune to mix.

as for playing the headliners tunes, I assumed this was a given but then again I still do see warmup dj's playing out the headliners tunes without a second thought lol
