iPhone 3GS 16gb - Help

Easy all, I've decided to buy an iphone, as my htc diamond is disappointing to say the least... A mate's offered me a white one for £220, or a black one for £200, I've decided to get one of each and sell my dad the white one for his wife for christmas...

Now, I'm not technically retarded when it comes to phones, but I've not used an iphone properly before, and I was wondering whether unlocking the network is any different to ordinary phones?

My step mum is on o2 so that's not a problem, but my contract with the dimaond is with orange... Taking into account the iphones im buying are not unlocked and restricted to o2, will I still be able to use my orange contract sim in the iphone? I'm not talking straight away, but will I be able to unlock it?

Thanks for the replies in advance, quite looking forward to getting one...

And to clarify why my mates sellin them before anyone asks, his dad runs a business and employs 6 staff, they were given iphones as business phones but none of them were happy with it's impracticality, so he's selling them off, £200 for a brand new 3gs seems pretty good? Had a look on ebay and they're well over double that...

Cheers again

Ideally, I need abit more info on the phone, what network etc, I doubt it'd come with a sim either...

I've messaged the guy advising I have a few people interested if he's unable to shift them, they're on o2, which is good news for my step mum, but means I'll have to unlock it myself somewhere, that o2 unlocking section on their website seems like it's just for o2 customers, either have to be pay & go or pay monthly...
