I was looking for sthg to fix my frustration to see Rob Papen's sound design masterclass DVD release delayed and came accross this.
Just bagged it as I assume for that price you can't really go wrong for 275p about software sound synthesis.
The book is from 2002 and the synths on the market have greatly improved since then but synthesis is synthesis, right ?
Anyway, just thought I'd let you know. I'll get back to the community after reading. Hopefully with some neat tricks to share.

I wholly recommend Sound FX by Case on Focal Press.

While written in laymans terms, it covers most topics with extreme detail.

The chapter on compression alone is the most comprehensive piece I've ever read on the topic!

I used to read books about production, I'd read like 3 pages and get hyped and go work on tunes

Yeah, I purchased it on impulse when I saw it

Kinda weird, some of it I felt like I already knew and wasn't worth buying the book for. Other parts taught me a lot, like the section on distortion. As mentioned, the chapter on compression is exhaustive, and gave me some cool ideas for a new compressor plugin!

I'm glad I bought it!

It's pretty much what I need actually, time to learn the ins & outs of effects.
Plus the reviews on amazon.com are 100% 5 star which is rare.

The Sound Synthesis with VST Instrument book arrived.
Chapter 1 is about sound fundamentals : perception of sound, waveforms, etc
Chapter 2 is about sound synthesis techniques : subtractive, FM, sampling, etc
Chapter 3 talks about the basics of several synths (NI's, Steinberg's, etc). Better RTFM and visit official forums.

So 2/3 of the book is straight useless but the 1st part is probably a good read for beginners.
I'm willing to give the book away, you just have to send me 4 EUR for shipping (Europe only).
