but how do you turn your song up? basically everything in my tunes is at the perfect volume but one tune might be quiter than the other but i dont know how to turn it up so it is the same volume as most other songs (obviously lol) without having to go through every sample and turn that up with a chance of losing the volumes ive got. i dont know whether this is part of the mastering process or somethign but surely there is an easy way to change the standard volume of it? (i run FL and when i turn up the master on that it gets distorted)

it's not a retarded question at all, but it is one that's been asked alot on here. Read the sticky on "mixing & mastering" to get an understanding of headroom.

I don't mean to be patronising, but that thread helped me quite a bit.

yeah read that thread that gh02 mentioned, and basically anything about compression and limiting. Basically what you want to do is - when you mix your track have everything sitting at a balanced level - don't push the volumes - if you want to hear it louder just turn up your speaker volume. Then at the end you have a nicely mixed track which can be limited, thereby pumping the volume up without distorting. Also read about the "loudness wars" (google). Interesting stuff!

yea, a proper mix and compression are key. i try to mix loud without distoriting then i bounce down to wav and process it from there to limit it and compress a little more.

read up on perceived loudness! also try to fill the frequency spectrum a bit more as this can help bring up the perceived loudness of a track, hope this helps
