Oh now I get it. hehe.
I don't really look out for it. Probably a decent track has about 15-20, but then come the one shots, and I keep making tracks, sometimes ending up with over 30 tracks.

depends on my percussion but i use about 4-5 soft synths a song. im thinking around 10-15 tracks

I am right in the average 20ish, I always thought that was the low side, people always tell me they are working with like 60-70 tracks, what for I don't fucking know. my 20 include doubled and tripled tracks sometimes. I even have a tune I did recently with like 8 channels and it sounded well full.

due to cpu load i try to keep it down to about 24 audio channels and maybe 5-7 sends. i tend to bounce and resample a lot so if i had unlimited cpu power im sure i could rack up. maybe 80 who knows.
but ya, theres not set rule, im with you abz, if it sounds full its done. 6 tracks or 60 its all in how you use em.

It must come down to your style I would imagine. Like doing something inefficiently like every single little percussion sound duplicated and spread across 4 channels. Not knocking, I don't do things by the book either but it just seems like things would get cluttered with that many tracks. about 6 for drums / percs
6-10 for different synth sounds (including risers / pads)
2-4 for samples
2-3 fx tracks (delays, filters)
sub bass

not including sends, less than 10. i have about 5 tracks for my percussion (kicks, snares, hats, random noises, drum loops) and then maybe 1 track for bass, another for some ambient sound.
i don't have much going on in my tracks tbh.
