Burials Pops...

So, think Endorphin, Im trying to figure out how to achieve a similar sound to the pops and vinylly feeling noises that replace what would otherwise be drums...
My initial thought was to just make a reverby airy sweep pattern n put it through a vinyl simulator, but tis not quite on, is there something Im missing here?
N hell, if were on the subject...
What are you minimal tech people doing to make your drums sound so damn crunchy-poppy-clicky-set-the-horns-off-in-the-club snappy? Once again, I see Burial do this, as well as alot of more deep dub artists... I cant really explain it, but think miniimal tech wooden blocky type samples...
Im trying to learn to write more deep end tracks, distortion gives me a headache after a few hours...

Band pass would probably sound better than high pass.

Could it just be as simple as a crackly intro or outro of a vinyl record? May not have to be studio trickery - could just be what it sounds like, crackly vinyl.

cant be that hard to make or sample a poppy vinyl noise, its not like just cause burial had a crackle on his song he did some amazing shit to get that sound. im bein a biotch sorry.

Interesting, I tend to have the opposite problem, in that my drums are TOO snappy...I always have to compress and roll off the highs nowadays for some reason.

9 times out of 10 it's just what it sounds like it is not long involved techniques or processing

Agree 100% Big up Deadly.
Dont over think it. Burial produces using soundforge, layering tracks over one another. His tools and approach are VERY basic. There is no sidechaining, no shit hot eqing, no fancy compression.
Its all about using the right samples in the right context. Have an idea of what you want your drums/percs/cymbals to sound like and DONT quit untill you find a sample that matches the sound in your head.

I get this completely.
But.
I dont have a two minute long severely popping vinyl with nothing else whatsoever included sample like Burial does... so... either someone suggest where too find about 2 minutes worth of heavily crackling blank vinyl already sampled, seeing as I have no turns... or help me figure out how to generate it.

There's some on freesound.org, and all over google via other sites.

There's a good album called "The Wit And Wisdom Of Ronald Reagan" that came out in the 80s. It features - you guessed it - absolutely no sound at all and is good for vinyl sampling. There was a follow-up called "The Wit And Wisdom Of Margaret Thatcher".

Most of the sounds ppl are trying to replicate from Burials tracks are things that were not planned by himself even. I would suggest you stop trying to mimic someone’s atmosphere tricks and create your own:)
The sound of a record crackling is just a sample you can get from any record. His drums are samples too and prob come from records with heavy compression/eq’ing etc. All standard processing for drums.
Trying to replicate someone’s ‘feel and vibe’ is not an easy task.

man there are like over a million websites that have 'crackle' samples free to download!
Why would you need 2 mins anyway? 6 secs looped in places is all you need. Change the filter type to change it up or whatever.

THIS
Looping a crackle underneath a repeating part adds instant 'sampled from old vinyl' atmosphere. You can do this with modulated white noise too, to make vst synths sound like they were recorded craply. Ferox, Wow n Flutter, and Isotope vinyl FTW.

who uses Ableton in this thread? all you gotta do is open an instance of vinyl distortion...tweak paramaters and resample. tweak, etc etc etc
