idk it best to have a snappy snare or clap. really syncopated hats and i almost always use a tambourine and a shaker. more than one snare is nice too. check out my soundclound i have some songs up
yeah i know bout the drums.. i can make 2 step drums out of anythink... just pitch it up and shorten the decay so its snappy... im more tryin too find out some of the instruments they used for there chords and stuff.. and i ove the basses even tho there easy too make. i can make perfect 2step bass on massive.. but even usin the same oscilators and principle on reason it sounds shit. :S gunna check ur soundcloud now tho.

dumb question of the day what exactly is 2step. ever since joining this forum my understanding of "genres" has gotten more and more cloudy. lol

Sampling mate, it's all about the samples. Get them right and the track literally builds itself.
Some of those tracks in there took about 4 hours or so to do. Not blowing my own trumpet but it shows what you can do. Some of the others can take a few days. No hard or fast rules.
Certainly use presets and such like depending on what software you use, but I try to get 'movement' in the preset sounds by subtle filter changes, resampling and compression, EQ etc.
You have to be sparing though and learn to use them wisely and subtly otherwise it just ruins the music.
This all comes with trial and error and learning the kit. My setup is really basic computer/software wise. I put money into the hidden things like decent cables monitors and interfaces, if you can get a cheap decent quality audio plug in box like Focusrite Sapphire or something.
Something like Logic (which I use) has amazing quality workhorse dynamic plugs that help. OK they're not Neve quality but they do the job well enough. I'm still on Logic pro 8 and don't want to upgrade to 9 because I'm learning it still, and making the thing work for me rather than the other way round. I use a 3 year old mid range Imac that's probably worth about four hundred quid now. I also used a knackered old Akai S3000xl which is great, plus a few cheap modules I bought of E bay for a couple of hundred quid. And a cheap 'Joe Meek' mono compressor that cost me eighty quid. All in my set up cost about fifteen hundred, bought over about three years. That's about the same as a new Powerbook.
My weapon of choice though is the EXS24 which gets used a lot! most of my drum sonds come from that and its rare that I use any audio.
Thats not to say I don't use the Ultrabeat, I do. But most of my music is sample based.

Sense, the most relevant to 2 step is the first line!

2 step, to me, is all about getting people moving in the shoulders and neck (dubstep is about getting the hips moving) ((brostep is about getting dudes to put their hands up and do the Atlanta Braves karatechop)). so really swung riddims, small-but-harsh sounds, etc.
unless yr gonna get all burial on us and literally go off the grid, use GROOVE TEMPLATES. i can't stress this enough. You need that swing, unless you're in the mood to quantize stuff by 32nd notes to get that 'skip' in your kicks (which is certainly not unheard of). Every DAW has some way to control and personalize the swing. look into that.
also, listen to the meters. Look-ka-py-py. Learn how ziggy modeliste played drums-- you don't gotta bash someone over the head with KICK SNARE KICK (it's unbelievable) to make them feel the riddim. follow that thru tower of power, to dancehall, to timbaland and you'll get a sense of how really syncopated shit can imply an intense groove without stating the obvious.
the best 2step... ok, the best dance music-- will blow up a room with just groovin' drums and some bass. it doesn't require wizardry. Rusko's "Love is Real" is really a pretty simple tune, but damn.. that groove!
jolly I believe ThinKing mentioned that chemical still had some copies left, but i know there's very few in general around anymore. glad u like!
