ye man biggest probly im having with limiting is if i dontlimit enough the snare is to loud so i turn it down and limit and its not in mix, so u turn it up and it looses its phatness n sounds flat! gaaaah practice makes perfect though aye?

for plain-old dynamic control-- that, or logic's built in limiter is nice and L2-ish.

not a fan of the L3. if your mix really, really needs multiband limiting, you've got a shit mixdown.

for coloration, i like the limiter in nomad factory's channel strip plug-in. Also a fan of the vintagewarmer, though it's far from straightforward.

and while i'm always impressed by the UAD1176's-- never got around to buying a UAD system.

hardware-wise, if anyone has a fairchild sitting around-- not mad at that ;)

I probably use the classic limiter more than anything. Does what it says on the tin nothing more nothing less.

Why would I want to use a limiter, and not a compressor?

L2 or MLimiter. Been using the latter a lot more recently

If you wanted to make sure the sound doesn't go over a certain level as opposed to lightly controlling the dynamics then a limiter is the way forward.

Good examples:

Sub bass - nice to use a limiter there, makes sure all of the notes hit at the exact same level.
Stereo Bus - used to raise the rms of a track (making the sound appear louder)

You have to try it and see, it can be very easy to overdo it with a limiter, it takes a lot of skill and experience to be able to get a mix louder through limiting without making the track lose it's energy.

dunno i pretty much dont use them

i like compressing things more, otherwise if your not careful with a limiter your tunes just end up at exactly the same level the whole way through with no dynamics at all

Elephant here most of the time, but sometimes it's Ozone, or the limiter in DSM (which is great on some stuff).

Actually, sometimes im a massive fan of Ozones "Intelegent 2" limiting. Sounds as crisp as elephant. I also love its Mid/Side treatment, but thats another thread for another day
