I'm really confused and need help

Q's
Do most people take breaks and chop them up and add there own drums and effects to get a drum pattern?
What is the most common drum pattern in dubstep? heard the 1 and the 3 but have no clue, and is there a name

I'm currently following this http://breakbeat.hattrixx.co.uk/ ,but it seems to it take way to long just to make a single drum pattern.

there is no 'amen' break for dubstep. make everything from single hits i say. all you need is the snares in the right spot then do whatever the fuck you want

when i used reason i used to like taking rex loops, cutting most of the hits out so there are a few that i like, and do that till i have a decent beat, then layer stuff over all the hits to thicken it out

now im in cubase im just using battery, but i still wouldnt mind using rex files, if i could figure out how to get kontakt to open them properly

Generally a dubstep beat is either a 2-step or a half time beat. 2-step = kick snare kick snare and half time = kick.....snare. No amen break for dub, just put it together, and make sure it grooves :D

Dubstep is usually made around 140 while the drums are banging at 70 bpm. The reason for this is so you can fill it out with nice hihat shuffles (which people don't seem to get... If you are gonna do kick hat snare hat then just make a 70 bpm beat in te first place.)

I wouldn't say you *NEED* to know anything about music to start with producing dubstep.

I suggest coppin your samples somewhere so you get an original sound. Don't be shy on the reverb on your drums.

GL making some tracks, and I can't wait to hear some tunes!

maybe you should listen to some dubstep and come to your own conclusions...?

and not just one style of dubstep either, minimal stuff, noisey stuff, techy stuff, ambient stuff, glitchy stuff, old stuff, new stuff, etc. and actually *listen* to it. properly.

Like gravity says, listen to as much Dubstep as you possibly can, ideally artists you hope to emulate (Not saying you SHOULD emulate artist ideas, but everyone does it when starting off).

Imagine a sequencer in your head, and count 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 etc. in time with the beat. What does the snare fall on? The kick? How often is a crash cymbal used? This is the best way to learn, imo.

there are 4 beats in a bar. at 140 bpm the kik and snare fall on the 1beat and 3beat. your basic rhythm. if you can make bass patches that are really fucking sick you dont need any music theory at all. but it certainly helps
:ghost:

abuse google and youtube. you must make google and the sequencer you choose your only friends. i also recommend that you go on outings with your mp3 player, but limit yourself to that social circle. that is, if you want to learn how to be competent (relatively speaking).

may the farce be with you.

Stay inside the lines but go outside the box. Drink tea. Don't only listen to Dubstep. Experiment, you may not enjoy writing Dubstep. Drink tea. Hate Psytrance. Get insomnia.
