FRIDAY 5TH FEBRUARY
THE HARLEY
10PM-3AM
TAX: £3 (FREE B4 11!)
Barely breaking stride to acknowledge the new decade, Rough Disko carries on hauling the freshest talent straight to Sheffield on the first Friday of the month...
Ben UFO is co-founder of the Hessle Audio imprint along with Ramadanman and Pangaea. Together they've been setting dubstep free from a wobbly boy-rave cul-de-sac, injecting a crisp futurist rhythmic bounce into the genre while paying respects to its slinkier house and UKG ancestry. Ten releases old, the label is firmly established in the UK’s front rank, influential in getting house and techno DJs playing dubstep records and slaying dancefloors with each new issue. Last year Hessle dropped massive twelves like Pearson Sound's 'Wad' and Untold's 'I Can't Stop This Feeling', along the way getting championed by everyone from scene dons Martyn and Kode 9 to minimal godhead Ricardo Villalobos and Berlin's Hardwax crew.
Ben himself gets regular props for his stunning, genre mashing sets – FACT Magazine reckon he’s ‘one of the best DJs in any scene or country’. If you want evidence, check his Fabric promo mix from May last year, effortlessly flexing its way through dubstep, grime, garage, house and techno, and getting justifiably listed among the year's very best (‘one of the most incredible things I’ve heard…absolutely mindblowing’ – Curbcrawlers). We cannot wait.
Pre-heating the platters for Ben, we are equally hyped to round out the lineup with Swansea's Doc Daneeka. Filtering out via the blogs during last summer with his huge remix of Digital Mystikz' Pathways, the good Doc has been turning out a stream of low-end rollers and deep, percussive UK funky that’s been caned by the diverse likes of Brackles, Sinden, L-Vis 1990 and Marcus Nasty. With further refixes for Jazzanova and Delphic, his 'Drums In The Deep' dropping on Fabric this month and more new material upcoming on Ramp, you know he's another straight-up Rough Disko cert.
Emerging from a serious post-New Year's bout of wine flu, the RD residents will of course be on hand to do what they do best: moving the Harley from the get-go with a clutch of house, techno, baile funk, tropical, UK funky, garage, cumbia and anything else we reckon is worth the time.
PS it's only three quid to get in. That's less than a pint. Or nowt if you turn up before eleven.
Immense lineup. Intimate venue. Sheffield get ready.
