I'm on a list to refuse one until they put me away... I don't like the idea of them very much at all.

£30, can use it instead of a passport inside Europe. Makes sense when I went to travel a lot to have something that costs £30 to replace rather than £100.
Also if the police ever pulled me over (which they have never done), do you really think they wouldn't find a way to find out who I am? Considering I carry a driver licence, bank cards, credit cards etc.

It's more the principle that offends me rather than any practical fear.. I normally carry something with my name/face on it anyway (driving license usually) and still need to use it surprisingly often to prove my age, but I hate the idea of being forced to carry something.

Well at the moment there are no solid plans to make it compulsory.
And they have have them in Germany and they're compulsory and It works pretty well in my opinion, my girlfriend, who's German, needed to get her first passport in Hamburg.
We just turn up with her ID and they give her a temp passport there and then because the ID is absolute proof of identify, none of this countersigning by a lawyer, doctor, teacher etc. I hope we employ something like that here!
As a mostly law abiding citizen; I don’t see a problem with it personally.

I know, and I'm finding it harder to argue. As they're no longer compulsory I don't see the problem at all.
I won't get one, mind, I've got plenty of proof of ID already.... and if they do try and force me (no rape) I'll still fight them all the way to the police station.

From what I understand, over here yes. If you get stopped and searched and your name comes up that you should have one on you and don't, you eligible for a fine and potentially more. The stnuc.

That was the original idea... they finally backpeddled and made it optional last year. I think it's still compulsory for immigrants, isn't it?

this shit isn't a problem because it's a drag to carry around more plastic, or even that the government require us to prove our identities, as an update to the old system in that respect it's not a bad idea, although overpriced and poorly implemented.
It's a problem because it's a whole new database that links everything about you and makes it accessible to various government and non gov agencies that cannot be trusted not to lose our fucking data by leaving it around (who really leaves the company laptop on a train?) and who will definitely be bang on fucking profiling and tracking.
I read something somewhere and then forgot where so I can't quote it that said regardless of the intentions, which are probably benign (no alien pimp), the infrastructure exists for real fucking liberties to be taken with your personal info if the wrong people get at it. This will presumably be done by criminal gangs rather than incompetent politicians with forked tongues.

I don't really see what's the problem with these id-cards, we've had them for ages over here...
they only bring positive things, why are some of you so negative against it?
