So yeah, i know how to do this and i know it's used ALOT in electro alot for the pumping.
But, what possibilities are there with side chaining in dubstep?
I mean, can anyone show me a few clips of dubstep basses that have been sidechained?

Not really Dubstep but FlyLo sidechains EVERYTHING

Sidechain the kick with bass also try snare and bus. Some people even do it with pads/leads! use ur imagination, try everything u can think of!

Yeah, i guess i'll give this a try.
I'm using reason though which doesn't help in making good basses because i always end up with something electro-ish

The key to making good bass sounds in Reason is to layer them! have a sine sub, then 1 lp bass, 1 bp bass and then a hp one if you like. Add FX like Chorus, Reverb and Distortion on each one apart from the sub. EQ unwanted frequencies in everything. The sine sub is perfect without anything.

A tasty sub? you can create a sine wave using any synth in about 5 seconds. The sub is the easiest bit to do. The bits that sit on top of it is where the fun begins.

Yeah i know this but sometimes the sub lacks depth, like doesn't have enough bass.
Some of the ones i make seem really flat at times and the low end needs boosting.
Maybe it's my headphones

I think you may be confused. A sine sub has no harmonics, you wont hear much of it but you will feel it. You do not need to boost it at all. You need to layer something ontop of it, a low/mid bass sound. With the Sine sub under it it will have loads of weight and fill out your frequencys in the lower end.

Headphones are tricky to produce on unless you know what you are doing or have high quality production headphones.

if by sidechain you mean sidechain-compress-- try it on pads, verbs, delays-- check out hyph mango for some great examples of that in dubstep.

if you're using logic, you can use any audio source as a sidechain input for any synth, and thus have access to their modulators and filters. try it out.

not true man, I've made some real nice sounds with the thor and maalstrom even subtractor. Its all about the techniques u use to layer up the bass and how they complement eachother in and around the track. Good luck with it tho

On my last track i sidechained a sustained kick to duck the bass so it all kinda murges together, then sidechained pretty much all the other noises the same.

I really like doing it with pads though normally or if u get a synth and put tons of reverb on that can sound really sweet.

a really cool thing to do is to stick it in a pipe and smoke it!

Not even a little somethin like a phat or a wee bit of shaping to break that 'sine' mould sometimes? Get some more oompmf out of em, just be careful you dont broaden anything out of freq, right?

fruitys peak controller is where it's at. it's my go to effect when im trying to come up with stuff and it's usually always a productive effort. i wish ableton had a peak controller!

Sidechaining is basically where you're setting up an effect whereby the bass output drops slightly every time the kick drum (or whatever else you want) hits. That way, the kick and the bass aren't competing so much for the same headroom in the mix. You hear it a lot on house/techno/electro tracks where it's used to get a pumping effect on the bassline.
