this thread has probably been made before but the search thing isn't helping me find it.

to put it simply, why are certain methods of djing looked down on so bad? for example, if someone's using a controller with a laptop (not serato, like the hercules rmx joint) but still beatmatching and mixing the same way they would with vinyl, what's the problem? it was the same with CDJs at first wasn't it, using them live would get man ridiculed. i guess what i'm asking is why do a lot of elitists still consider new technology 'cheating' or whatever, if you're using the same method to get the tracks out there, just on a different medium? the argument about sound quality isn't what i'm getting at by the way.

there will always be old school heads who think the way it started is better, and there will be people from every background that say there way is the right way. my advice to everyone embracing the new technology these days is just to do it as best you can, and show up the people that are close minded. blow their minds!

it's weird, i learnt with vinyl but around the time i started uni i surprisingly ran out of money to buy stacks of records every month. when i recently got back into playing i tried a controller/laptop because my record collection was so out of date, and to be honest i think it's pretty cool.

because I think there's a difference between traditional vinyl DJing and what you're capable of doing with programs like Ableton (and especially now with Ableton/Serato link up).

If one is merely beatmatching one track into each other on Ableton, then they're not exploring it's deep capabilities. It's a waste of the program. I see Live as a "going buckwild" way of performing. Maniplulating tunes to a point where they will only be heard for that moment in time...at that venue....and never again. Electronic music at it's finest.

So then it gives off the wrong impression to the "I swear by vinyl" squadron. Why should they respect someone who is simply beatmatching two tracks on the laptop?

Obviously everybody's intentions are different. Some heads are using VDJ for fun...small parties and just having fun. not so much to proclaim that they are DJs and get all sorts of gigs. Not everybody takes it that seriously.

But even with VDJ I've heard some dope shit.

And still, at the end of the day everybody is entitled to do whatever they want (to an extent)

ah yes

and thinking about it I got a copy of VDJ....have yet to open it. However I also use Ableton. Perhaps some VDJ/Ableton/nanoKontrol business can go down.

used to have the RMX, good little starter for laptop djing. now use the NS7 which is just epic!
