Okay, I've owned battery for a year or so, but never really use it. The idea of it in my head is great, but I just don't like using it for some reason. I've been working with it, and trying to figure out what I don't like (other than a bloated/paged interface).

I've figured this much out:

My drums don't sound good coming out of battery.

They don't sound like beats I make out of fruity's step sequencer, or laying out audio hits in cube's timeline, or even out of FPC. They just sound kind of mushed. Less space, less impact. Argh I don't know how to describe it. They just sound helluv amateurish, whereas my drum beats don't sound that way in other fore mentioned software.

What am I doing wrong/missing? What does it take to get battery banging?

The interface is the most straight forward & quick to use IMO. Did ya ever try Ultrabeat, now thats a fiddly interface

I have used battery, exs24, Kontakt, simpler and just plain audio. I found battery was definitely the best sounding of the lot (except kontakt as they share the same audio engine). I don't know why you think they sound mushy. Maybe because by default they are fully velocity sensitive and maybe not hitting at full velocity? just an idea.

In my uni we had a big blind test to see what sounded better, and we all couldn't tell the difference. The only thing that did stand out was when we used the EXs24, Its a great sampler, but it sounded much more 'digital' than the rest

Yeah that might be a part of it. I find myself compressing the velocities inside flstudio.

I also usually sum in battery, and just use the stereo master out. Can a plugin's summing engine contribute to this mushyness?

Yeah, I don't necessarily think there is some type of deficiency in Battery, just in the way I'm using it. Seems like it is going to take more effort than some of my other tools to get a well mixed drum sound out of it. Just looking for any tips and tricks, or any kinda "ah ha" moments user's have had with it.

You should try flstudio some time. Very compact. Doesn't have all of Battery's features in the basic sampler type channel, but it is quick as hell, and has enough for me to ususally make a good drum mix w/o any eq or fx.

I feel u. Think a lot of those logic plugs pay more attention to graphic design blingyness than usability.

i use battery in fl...
battery is straightforward..

fl sampler is simple as fuck but just cant compete with battery.. im sorry i still think taht battery, for sum reason, sounds bigger...

prolly in my mind tho, we ALL know its a matter of skills..

Yeah dude just use FL. Don't want to sound harsh, but I've lost count of the number of threads / posts I've seen from you like this with other software. If you're not feeling a program, you need to find one that DOES suit you. It sounds like that's FL to be honest.

That's what I'm trying to do, bro. Fact of the matter is, I love fruity, but it doesn't do everything I need it to do. When that happens I have to go out to 3rd party apps. I'd like to play in more beats, so I need a drum sampler to work w/ my pad kontrol.

Perhaps I should give the FPC another look. I haven't even used the new one in 9.

The thing with Battery, it looks good on paper, people swear by it, but I'm just not working it right. Trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Post a clip of the same drums in Battery and in something else? Doesn't need to be anything complex but it'd probably help people tell you what you're doing different in batt.

yeah that's not a bad idea...i've never really used FL so i can't tell you what's different about it really
