hey so I am trying to figure out how to make one sample silence another in fl studio other than sidechaining, my roomate recollects it has something to do with the layer option in fl studio but we could not figure it out. I am trying to make an alternating hihat/openhat pattern where the hihat silences the open one if that helps at all.

If you click your hi hat sample, go to Misc, there's a bit that says Cut and Cut By... don't remember 100% how to use this but that's one way.

The other way would be to go to INS and then turn the release down on the Volume envelope then program the hi hats in the piano roll (that way you get to control how much of the sample is played).

One of the ways to do this is to go to the MISC tab of your Sampler Channel, where you'll see 2 parameters called Cut and Cut By.
Cut assigns a cut channel to this Sampler Channel. Cut By is a parameter to set which cut channel will cut this channel off when played
For example:

You assign your closed hihat to Cut 1, then you assign your open hihat to Cut By 1.
The effect of this is that the sound of the open hat will cut off when the closed hihat plays.

Hope this answers your question.

I do the same thing but using midi, setting up 'choke' groups in battery, so that i can artificially shut an open hat with a closed one, giving a pedal hat kinda thing.

This is a drum sampler fundamental. I cannot imagine making beats without cut groups, or mute groups.

Another use of this technique is to load up a sample of silence, and use that like a mute on the step sequencer. If you want to do halts or have a sound cut on a beat, this works well. If you're too lazy to make a sample of silence, u can't use a sample whose velocity is set to 0 (the cut or mute will not work), but it does work if you set the velocity to 1, lazy I know, but lazy is as lazy does.

In FL, by the way, you can also use Cut Itself, which will make the sound cut off it's own tail if it plays again. For people who are too lazy to use ADSR

always cut the open hats by the closed hats, that's probably the most important thing I've ever learnt about drums
