Surefire Sound 002

"SF's Dean J. Grenier, a.k.a. DJG has risen quickly in the electronic ranks via singles on Tube 10, Subway and Narco Hz that showcase his potent techy tracks. He links up with Toronto, Canada's XI, whose releases on Formant and Immerse have lead to mixes for Sonic Router and a growing international following. "Putney Says" features an intricate, percussive rhythm that lumbers like a giant, each step punctuated by mountainous bass thumps. Sizzling analog synths, vaporous filtered pads and well-timed drops round out this effective and tension-building work."

"Another producer who's finally receiving the recognition I just presumed had already happened out in the wider world, San Franciscan rave dweller DJG, is in the midst of an onslaught, dropping collaborative 12"s with XI and Headhunter as well as solo 12"s for numerous labels, the first of which "Avoid The Noid" b/w "Duality" is out on the Pushing Red label this week. Already somewhat of an anthem with Headhunter, "Avoid…" is a fine example of G's authority when it drops, pummelling bass textures and synth washes hit out at you but when he cloaks it in the descending piano riff, it just lifts the piece out of the bass bins and into a somewhat lighter trajectory before his echoed tech stabs bring it back down to eyes-down cave rave business." - Urb Magazine

"Atmosphere. in a sense, it is the spirit inherit within all great music. It can belong to the most brash banger as much as the most subdued soundscape. It is this element, on each side of the coin, that piques all's attention once it hits the soundsystem. It is thus, quite mysterious when subtlety becomes, through its atmosphere, as overwhelming of an element as one could imagine, on ether side of the coin.

DJG, a long time resident of the San Francisco area, and current resident of the area known as Lower Haight, has yet to commit an artifact of this sound to his permanent record this is not a clear example of absolute austere atmosphere and pronounced, pointed class. One could say he has a svelte discography to date, but as with any great artist, anyone versed in the sound involved, and thus had heard the works gets an immediate mental picture once thinking of the titles. "Shadow Skanking". "Buena Vista". "Ghost Town". Those who know, know what we are referring to here.

The same can be said of "The Gate" a Indian tinged builder with its multitude of low frequency elemental interplay, and "Obsessed" a gradual progression of melodic beauty on par with the psych rock geniuses of the 70's, had they possessed such a toolkit. These are further examples of pieces of a singular in nature sound created by the one known as DJG that leave an instant memory imprint upon the listener.

LoDubs is pleased to welcome DJG to the fold, and in doing so, add two more distict mental pictures of sound to the world."

I finally got around to listening to this mix this morning and it's really fantastic. Time is the Fire is my favorite tune of the moment right now. I can't wait for that to drop.

Hopefully we'll get to see you sometime soon up here in Seattle.
