Any of you guys use this for live stuff, or production (though I can't see that being as useful) maybe? I'm just (barely) getting to grips with it, the potential is incredible but it's hard to get my head around.

if you're learning Max, I'd suggest grabbing Ableton Live and then grabbing the Max for Live instrument Ableton offers. you'd then have a Max/MSP environment inside Live.
also, the preset instruments that come with max for Live make learning Max a LOT nicer...you can pull full patches apart to check out how they work.

I'm just trying to learn the basics to get it to do some interesting things with audio and control reason/logic. There's so much to learn though I'm not too sure where to start.

i connected my xbox controller up as a midi controller for ableton using it, so i could do little noise improvs with the analogue sticks and shoulder buttons.
it's so, so, so, much deeper than that though. i'm lazy. Autechre or Leafcutter John could show you how to wipe the floor using that program

no disrespect at all, but if Max is "nothing special" to you, you haven't gotten into it enough.

The possibilities are endless but the learning curve is steep!
Is it for everybody? No.
Is it amazing? Yes.

Yeah just like most programming languages. I haven't had a chance to dive into the api yet

I use Pure Data (which is basically MAX but shareware made by one of the guys who did MAX). You can do some pretty sick stuff with it if you invest the time to get into it (fortunately my degree has forced me into spending time learning it).
