I organise by artist name.

I sort alphabetically by label or cat # , as I find a lot of 12's are split between artists and i'm never sure which one to dig for , with my computer nearby I can always google the track and find the label if I forget. In the bag for the night it's by style and general order i'll be playing.

For me mine are organised by genre, so Dubstep, Garage, House, Drum & Bass, Jungle, Hip-hop, Other.
These are all organised by Labels.
However the majority of my collection is Drum & bass and dubstep, so there is more organisation within these.
I Organise my Drum & bass still by record labels but they are split by style (Liquid, Minimal, Jump-up).
My Dubstep however is not split into styles, except I keep the white labels at the back.

Never been that keen on organising by artist.

EDIT: Records are in chronological order within labels

any sense of organisation i do gets destroyed when i go on a mental mixing session... those days it takes me an hour just to put everything back in the right sleeve, let alone order them!!

but the thing i cant work out is digital!!!!! only recently been buying WAV's, 320's etc, and i dont know how to order them on cd. do people put 1 file per cd, or tracks from one artist, or what?! how do you maintain order in a cd wallet :|

vinyl person myself, would you just do it by artists so its easy to find? and then permanent mark the tracks on the cd?

yeah started by artist, get everything on one disc, done. then another ep comes out and ruins everything! i'm sure its all very logical, but i like you are a vinyl head and storing 100's of digital tracks for quick reference is long

I order my stuff by genre, then style within that genre, so if i want a tune of a certain vibe, i know the tunes organised around it will have the same sorta vibe

but i only really have that with one or, if im lucky, two genres at a time

there's essentially no true way to organize a vinyl collection without having the risk to "miss out" on one or another tune. I have my records sorted by genre, then by artist and then chronologically. However for my Dubstep records I found that sorting them by year as well also helps a bit (so I have a stack for 2007 and older, 2008, 2009, 2010... then sorted by artist etc.). I could never be assed to sort by label. There's so much stuff out on one-off operations or labels that don't have many releases, I would struggle finding a lot of tunes let alone it would take away a lot of space (which has become an issue for me)

I only have 250 records, in no real order, but I keep my favourite records in sections of about 30 vaguely organised by style and i pretty much know where every record in my collection is within about 10 records just from memory...

the ones with the most coke residue on the sleeves go in last. The more popular stuff has the most chance of being out so the most chance of being "soiled".

It works for me.
