I've always found it quite hard to do (without it drifting off into an incoherent mess).
Vishnu posted some excellent ambient pieces here:

Not much else comes to mind (although I did love that first track on the new Echodub Loves compilation).

Ambient/Utility foler is weighing a hefty 3 gigs these days and getting a bit crazy, I need to cut the fat of what I dont use in sets out of that shit... but yeah... heh... make it...
And I got a bunch of shit floating around thats just me fingering through chords on the keys, quantize, loop, repeat, bleh, bleh, bleh...
I call it utility shit becaus eI have no better use for it.

make quite a few, most of them have remained on my hard drive for now - some may well end up on an album of EP one day.
http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=42532 < one at the end of that mix that I quite like.
and one on the soundcloud - a remix of a kuma track (different to another version that came out on TKG003 12")
Soundcloud
quite lo-fi and grungy that one

I used to find it easier to write stuff with no beat, and would usually compose a few minuets of pads and ambiance and then end up leaving it at that. That's started to change recently though as I have started forcing myself to begin with rhythmic elements straight up.

ive been trying to get something like this off the ground for a few weeks, certainly isnt easy. keep finding myself needing to stick a beat behind anything half decent

MAn I had this peachy lil number called Euro that I began to strip down - the more I took away the better it became until eventually nothing was left except a few echoed samples and lush synth pad ... it was 8 minutes 'short' too ...
Unfortunatly it was on the PC that got killed by a power surge on Saturday so I cant post it up
If I get it back to life Ill show and tell.
I think theres a lot of scope for either totally ambient or very very stripped down dubstep personally
Its also a good way to check the strength of your tune - just mute the beeps and see if you get bored, if not = WIN

Well what are we waiting for?
DSF ambient mix tape ... and for once the DJ will really have to try hard to fubar the mix!
Seriously it would be kinda cool to have a 140 bpm Dubstep mix with no 'step' at all
... just me?

ambient's a great style of music.
but if we're talking in terms of dubstep with no drums, I think it'd be a bit hit or miss.

I see what you mean, but I'm sure there are times in your sets where you wish you had something with no beat in order to transition or bring in something less complicated... a lot of this shit would be nice with some wobble and boom snap behind it.

This is the only beatless track I've semi-finished...

Not the best mix as I got a bit bored in the end

Dunno if you have the iphone or not but if you do theres a wicked mic you can get called the mikey by blue for £50 - that and an app called fire means you can record direct to wav in high quality stereo and then upload it directly to soundcloud for use later - tis great fun
glad you like the track - I make shit like that but Im never sure if anyone will listen to it
If my pooter wasnt fooked Id have a stab at mixing all these together.
