i've heard of people sampling the tail of an 808 kick and using it for their sub.

what's the difference between that and just using a sine? something to do with harmonics?

apparently there's a slight amount of noise, I can't hear any difference.

An 808 kick is just a sine wave with a bit of white noise. Thats it.

808 everyday. there IS a difference. just because the waveforms look similar doesn't mean they hit the same at the same frequencies. and i would use the very beginning of the sample as opposed to the tail end, but that's just me. trust me, make two identical basslines, and use a pure sine for one and an 808 for the other, and tell me which one knocks harder.

i've also noticed that those purely 808 bass notes you hear in so much american club music always throw sooooo much wilder than any dubstep track, which has a lot to do with the fact that the impact of the kick in the low-mids and the actual sub-bass are one and the same, but there's also something really undeniable about the sheer intensity of the low end in a song like this:



i dare you to a/b that on a decent pair of 18's with any dubstep track (aside from a couple loefah tunes) and tell me it doesn't smash.

In theory it's just a sine, but in practice it's gone through analogue circuitry before being sampled so there may be a small amount of noise and distortion in there. The difference due to noise and distortion is probably inaudible unless the 808 was going through equipment actually *designed* to change the sound (there are some tube-compressed 808 samples knocking around for example), but remember you've gotta get the amplitude and pitch envelope right as well.

hahaha thats pretty awesome. im a huge defender of autotune though. imo it just sounds really really REALLY good, always, no matter what, im down to hear you lay some autotune on it. slightly off-topic but you just reminded me:

i live in LA, and ill go ahead and say it: they love bass here. like.... love it.

i've been to shows (ironically named bassface) that are just that.... only suffocatingly loud bass. mid/high range are nonexistent.

anyway... i've been to a few rap shows as well, and the 808 that they use on a much smaller system is generally that much louder than the dubstep sines...

my theory is that its because 808 is a drum-bass... it has that impact hit at the start of every note that really drives the sound home, and accents the melody of the bassline.

so, if i want the bass to ride the melody, i use sines, if i want the bassline to BE the melody, i smash it home with 808

hey, im not too sure about this i only really glanced at it, but I read something before telling you how to make 808s with a synth, and it was saying to set an envelope so that the pitch is higher when you hit the note and then goes lower, so I spose if you do that then at the start it would be more mid range bass to give that punch, before sinking down to the sub to give the boom, Im yet to try it but im hoping it sounds pretty sick when i do cos thats what im after, i need some punch with them. I did try using an 808 sample someone uploaded but that didnt really have any punch, it was just way to clicky at the start.

808 kicksub every time!!!!!!!

Has more girth. The goldbaby 808 pack has some meaty 808 kicks. They sound more 'solid' then sines imo due to the analogue saturation/white noise

I would've thought an 808 sub would be the way to go just because of all the analouge processing but I just can't be arsed to sample an 808 everytime I want a sub
