Hello,
I really want to start DJ'ing and making mixes for fun in my bedrom, but I'm low on cash.
I was thinking of starting off with a DJ MIDI CONTROLLER? and just my laptop. (that's the cheapest way to go right?)
So, anyone has any advice on the best way to start that off? Like what program is best and any suggestions on a DJ MIDI CONTROLLER?
Thank You,
-dub4esta

Honestly a Korg NANOKontrol has everything you NEED, maybe not everything you WANT (I.e. jog wheels) but definately everything you need.

Plenty of buttons for play pause loop ect...
Plenty of sliders for volume faders, pitch faders, crossfaders, effect control...

those are cool, my budget i would say is about 250 dollars... not including what I will spend on the program....
I allready have an MIDI interface... so I guess i'm just looking for advice on a decent DJ MIDI CONTROLLER.
but the korg microkontrol looks pretty awesome and cheap to start with.

I'm thinking of a cheap m/c and some software as I can't afford decks atm (and I reckon that laptop DJing would be a good place to start on a budget, although I may be wrong)

Dude you dont need decks to DJ and Im tired of people thinking you do. Quit caring whathardcore old heads think of you. Thier gonna die of old age soon and as long as your really beatmatching and not ableton visual cueing noone is going to judge you for being digital.
I think, the biggest thing everyone is neglecting to remind you people of is that you will be needing a multi-out soundcard to be able to handle cueing!
The layout of the controller shouldnt matter much, as long as it has all the buttons/faders/knobs you need, thats why I suggested the nano.
But, if you do wnat to learn, your not going to be able to do it with a controller alone. Id rather trade my controller and go back to a mouse then not have Cue... that would, quite literally, be impossible if your not being a total douche n visual matching.

I think people stereotype a DJ as having a set of decks and headphones, and you're right Basic, in that digital DJing is taking over conventional DJing,
A decent laptop is I would think a good place to start, something with decent RAM and a decent soundcard. I've just got the basic setup as yet. But I can't even mix at all really so first I'm gonna look into just pissing about before getting anything,

Dude if you can get your hands on liek two walkmans and solder a ghetto spliced cable, or try using windows media...
I know that sounds straight lolable.
But I learned on a combo of those systems (mostly media, didnt rig walkmans until like 2 weeks before I came into the cdjs...)
Its two play buttons though...

Whats your opinion on people who use beatgrids then? set up your grids properly then just hit sync and everything keeps in time.

Thats exactly what I have a problem with? not having to actually be able to match or mix? I know I can train my computer to just mix for me while I walk around and drink but I dont want to?
My opinion, and take no offense to this, is that people who do that, really detract from people like me who just cue up with the pitch fade n our ears.
My opinion, is that if you cant beatmatch and flow indefinately until you faint from exhaustion, with nothing but your ears and two players, your not a dj?
My opinion, is very controversial.
But Ive spent hours everyday for years learning that... and I did it with absoltuely nothing (see crummy gear thread)... and Im sorry, if that makes me feel a little better about my own talents, and work ethic, then a kid with a sync button or ableton grids or w/e. But I do.
