Tascam US-144 + Ableton + Windows 7 64 bits = LATENCY

I recently downloaded the 64bits drivers for the TASCAM US-144 but haven't been able to tune my system properly.
I run ableton 8 on windows 7 64 bits.
I can't run the asio drivers in ableton, it crashes all the time.
I got my best result by using direct x drivers with big buffer sizes, but the overall latency is now more than 600 ms, which is way too much.
Has anyone had the same problem?
What can I do?

i'd email tascam, if you can't get the asio drivers to run your never gonna get low latency.

if it's not a 144 mk2 you're pretty much fucked tbh

It is an MKII
I have emailed them alright. But they're pretty slow to answer...

surprising, i remember emailing them a year or so ago about trying to get some drivers for linux and even though i didn't get what i wanted i did get a prompt reply.

i have exactly the same setup, try downloading asio4all in the meantime. You can lower the latency with that.

This happened to me as well. The asio4all gave me more stability with the 144 than the normal drivers! I went and bought a delta 1010 after that, and now the Tascam is just a glorified USB headphone amp.

I have a Tascam 122L which I'm using with Live... it's a fucking nightmare.... input lags, clicks, pops, and big crashes. The ASIO4all drivers weren't any better, and you can't run live and say youtube/VLC player at the same time (for tut's and stuff)...I'm going to smash it to pieces with a large hammer, and then burn all the bits one at a time.
Anyone got any suggestions for something cheaper than a Delta 1010.... I want to be able to plug in my Roland TD10 (midi cables)...but for about £150 quid?? ideas appreciated...

I use my 122l to record from my td12k. When using midi just have a lower latency(bad audio but isnt needed anyway) and high latency for recording audio. I'll be honest i get pops and clicks all the time though. Its so shit listening to a song a week later and realising the shitty clicks were actually recorded and the song is ruined. Next i would try getting a rackmount of ebay, ive seen some fairly cheap ones with like 12x inputs that look solid.

cheers, but I'd need USB so was thinking maybe this might do the job?....I'm steering clear of Tascam for now too...

or would it be worth spending an extra few quid?

if you can use firewire then use it, even if it means getting a firewire card, its going to be much lower latency plus it takes some load off the cpu if you have a firewire interface as oppose to usb.
either of those m-audio should be alright though.

Skip the maudio.
I wish people researched this stuff before buying. Never mind the stats of the various audio cards, the quality of the drivers is the biggest threshold issue.

ok? I don't want to spend some hard-earned and be in the same position...what do you recommend then? On the one hand I'm on a budget, but on the other I want zero latency on midi inputs ideally

Do you have midi devices that use the old fashioned midi cables, or do you have usb over midi devices?
I have been told that you will have a bit of midi lag with the old cables, the lag is minor and can be compensated for (largely). Nothing like you play a note and you have to wait for the sound, more like your transient phases won't line up properly (which is still a big problem).

The V Drum interface is old stylee midi cables. If I can get that to work with minimal lag then that would be good, but with this Tascam 122L I struggle with lag even with the Axiom25 pads!

How much lag are we talking about?
Are you sure it's midi lag and not audio lag?

just enough lag to make it impossible for me, as a drummer, to tap in beats (even using the axiom) I really can't explain it any other way, so it's prob no use to you at all. The Tascam drivers are woeful though

Does the vdrum output audio? Or is it just a midi triggering device?
Midi lag is usually a few ms, even for a super accurate drummer that is pretty tight. Audio lag however can be quite a bit more. My intuition, without looking at your situation, is that your midi is tight enough, but the lag that you are hearing is from the audio. Could explain better but falling asleep.
