Forgive me for not going through all the research out there, but I figure someone has a ready answer for this. I have a grip of Mpeg-4 and mp4 tracks that I never use when playing on systems but there is some really good music in there. The research I have done tells me that it is a much better overall technique as it gives you more information in a smaller file size without quality loss.

The average bit rate I am seeing is 250-270 ish. MP3 is useless below 320, would these be the same? What is the standard bit rate for this file type or is it QT and DVD bound for life?

How so? .m4a and .wav would be 2 different file types right?

Open up a spectral view of a 320 and a mp4 file, compare them!

I've been looking at OGG recently, 6meg vs 12meg per song, plus judging from my (unprofessional, but average) eye on the spectrums, better than a 320 for preserving frequencies.......

Shame nothing supports it...

Im linux. We left you behind years ago. We, use 450's. Not ou fault you guys, dont have a community maintain software pool that keeps support for these things current...

If I could get my hardware supported for live use and a setup I felt happy with, I would be using linux... . At the minute I'm tied to Microsoft Windows with a tight leesh...

I'll prolly get alpaca'd for this, but I disagree. It depends on the encoder you use; I've heard 128s that sound terrible and 128s that sound alright. I doubt very many people would be able to tell a decent 256 from a 320 in a double blind test, maybe even 192. Again, I'd stress that it depends on the MP3 encoder.

(I don't know anything about MPEG4, sorry!)

"allright" is never, ever acceptable.

mp4's can be lossless. if they're of lower-quality than 320's, honestly, you've got an uphill marketing campaign against you. If they're of the 780kbps, lossless variety, they're not bad.

if you're a badass DJ with wicked selection playing a killer night, you can get away with rocking a 128. maybe. if not..............
