i always think of Guitar Hero for some reason..

or even Metal Mouth..

i know those are both skream tracks so it's just kind of his thing, but what is it really? those tracks are dirt simple and incredibly stripped down... what is it that just gets you staring into the bassbin at a rave?

what tricks do you guys have for creating those hypnotic basslines, if any?

Certain chord sequences trigger certain emotions and are associated with certain feelings, be it euphoria or melancholy or joy, or anger. Trick is to just hone in on what chord sequences create what feelings then build your bass lines around that. Well, for me anyway.

Skream's talent definitely leaks through in all of his works. He has an amazing ear for tones and can work LFOs in a way that few can.

also, he has produced probably a trillion or more songs and therefore has had a lot of practice, and since only a few make it to completion, he basically can make a "greatest hits" with every release.

the most important thing i've learned from skream/benga/loefah/etc... is that one riff can make or break a song... once you have the perfect one, people can listen to it practically all night

completely different vibe to those skream bits, but i always find this one really hipnotic

<iframe src="/forum/video.php?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLL3ozepm1s" frameborder="0" style="overflow:hidden; height:auto; max-width:540px"></iframe>

listening to all of them, theres basically sod all melody in the bass, so the hipnotic element is literally just coming from the relentless repetition of the bass, and any variation comes from the stuff around it.

Depends what you mean by "hypnotic".

Jedeye's "Running up that Hill" has a nice hypnotic feel about it.

But there is a talent to recognising such riffs.

adding a little flange or sweeping filter can add to the "hypnotic" effect. just make it sweep slow.

Yeah, bro you're asking really, why are those tracks good, and the answer is because they are.

I don't know really anything about skream personally, but I get the impression that I'd like to jab him in the chops a few times, but he makes sick ass toons, plain and simple.

And frankly, he does it generally in the most difficult way, minimally.

Just start making bass lines, upon bass lines, upon bass lines. Even if you're shit, you are bound to stumble on one good one every few hundred or so. Use the good one!

Like was said, a lot of what makes those tracks move is other elements coming in, going out, little cadences, etc.

Search a recent thread re hooks, some thoughts in there about what makes a good hook.

GOd I love all the songs you guys have posted. I really dig skream's minimalist style, and Its true I think half the battle with the hypnotic style is having a consistant bassline with few notes that are quite long and little variances that come in and out around them. Also I think that Vex'd does this really well as well I find his tracks to be hypnotic as fuck with his pulsing bass and bitchslap snares smacking me around. subtly is key for these kinds of things I think.

This is all really true. However I reckon the simple-ness (if that is a word) of Skream in particular and many top producers in general fools people. People think making electronic music, especially dubstep, is just pushing a few buttons or playing one riff. When these people start making dubstep you get shite imitations. What makes the cited songs above amazing is that they seem simple but actually have shit tons of work behind them, yet remain easily accessible. I guess what I'm saying is that hypnotic basslines are an awesome thing, but they don't come without work.

What chord sequence is used in Guitar Hero, and what emotion is associated with it?
