Exact plugins/outboard effects that Datsik and Excision use?

:D Hello all. This is my first post here at the dubstep forums. I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I used the forum search function to no avail. :(

I just started getting into listening to Dubstep when I first heard Excision and Datsik's brilliant track "Swagga" a few months back. One can't say Dubstep without thinking about all the thought and editing and feeling that went into that masterpiece! Since then I've pooled through the Dubstep Production Bible and played around with FL Studio (well, I've been using FL Studio for years, but I've produced mostly trance). I love the experimental sounds in the many various tracks of Dubstep.

Now, this isn't really a "what plugins should I use" type thread as I found plenty of links to great free distortion units (and plenty of threads saying "you should buy Ohmicide" or "Izotope Trash" or "Massive Synth", etc). I still haven't experimented enough yet, but I'm starting to get the hang of producing Dubstep.

No, rather, this is a thread with one simple question, "What manner of plugins/outboard effects do Datsik and Excision use?" When I play with my sounds, I never can quite get the same types of sounds they use. I don't wish to copy their style for my own future productions. I'm just super curious. Any clues? Cheers.

Troll puts extra effort in. Shows promise but need to stop disrupting class during some lessons. Quite talkative during early lessons. He needs to focus more on his homework too. If either parent is available to come in to see me I'll discuss this matter further.

Listen, I'm not asking "how to be like Excision and Datsik". I know it takes practise and patience to get as good as them. I'm pretty adept at mixing, but the point is that I come from a trance background. And all I was asking was what they used in their arsenal. Bum Robot's answer is about the best actually, because he's right. ;)

So then, why do you think I'm trolling when all I asked was an honest question? I read the forum rules here and I don't consider my post as trolling. I did a forum search before I even posted. It's not nice to try and join someplace that right away jumps on your ass. I mean, I apologise if I did anything wrong, but I don't see how you can take my first post above as trolling.

Hey bro don't get the wrong head of the thread (as it may be). This is forum is actually an awesome resource with heaps of talented and knowledgeable contributors. But recently heaps of people have been trolling and getting responses, people are over it. Also a 'datsik and excision question' can seem cliched. In the end it just doesn't matter what outboard units/plug ins they use. They're just good at using what they have. I'm sure if you gave them a FL demo they could make some transformee whatev sound it is they make (don't really listen to it much). Also I remember datsik posting on here a while back, search for that. He talks about sampling lots of crazy sounds, and then synthesizing the shit out of some others, then combining those two techniques with re sampling and massif automation.

Dogs on acid is the best resource for this question, but dont get me wrong DSF has some info bout it. but DOA has alot of stuff about resampling which is what they do.

Sorry JWMM, people on the production board have been slowly losing their marbles over this very issue for a long time. Now whenever anyone new walks in asking how to make Excision and Datsik noises, basically everyone collapses in front of their computer, wherever they are in the world, and froths at the mouth. It happens to everyone.

They go nuts because this very question, (this very question!) gets asked on a very regular basis, and furthermore, most of them (well, I should say us) are snobs who believe that they are delving into the "deeper" side of dubstep, and therefore spurn Datsik's and Excision's outrageous wobbles.

You said you've read the production bible, if you have a filter, a distortion unit, download CMT bitcrusher, and with lots and lots of practice, those noises will become yours. There is no magic technique, just practice.

 It's a shame that other people who are trolls preconditioned others to have the wrong notion about me. Usually when I join a forum with a question, no matter how cliched or noob it may be, people are patient to respond (or direct me to a forum rule I may have overlooked) and help me along. That's why when everybody started calling me "troll", I was utterly shocked. Being of a more analytical mind, it didn't make any logical sense and gave me the impression that somehow I was doing something wrong, even though it seemed friendly enough from all the other posts I've read. Now it makes perfect sense! The trolls that have been bombarding this place and this very question being asked ad nauseum. Sorry guys! I didn't mean to ask something that people ask a thousand times. Being new to dubstep, I fell right into the cliche!

Thanks for the links and advice and apology. :t: Let's, just, move on then. Time to try out my own setups until I find a combo I like.

One other question that may sound dumb. Should the filter be the second-to-last item in the effects chain before the delay/reverb unit? Thanks again everyone.

:w:

ABout the filter, that depends on the sound that you're looking for. No right way or wrong way to go about it. For some effects you'll find the order of effects does not impact much, for others it will make a world of difference. So just try both and choose the one you want.

I like this guy, he seems genuine enough.

I honestly don't think making this kind of sound is something you can accidentally make while messing around with some synths, you need to know or at least have a rough idea of what tools they're using and then taking it from there, form what I've seen and heard from the other 'datsik wobblez' posts I think it's mostly; distortion, bitcrushing, chorus, resampling, layering then resample again. and yes I always put the filter at the end of the fx chain.

oh and welcome to the production forum :t:

I know the op, he isn't a troll, as amazing as that may be. The form was just so perfect!

As grooki mentioned, we get that question 10 times a week, and about 5 are trolls (regular forum members in guise, don't even ask why).

The question you have asked has been answered so many times in so many ways, from the heads themselves, you really should search it out here in the forum. The answers are there.

Do take some time to listen to other forms of dubstep, you may be quite surprised.

No offense to trance, but I think you're going to have to push your synth/processing skills if you want to make either those types of sounds, or sounds of that caliber.

Brostepforum may have some answers for you as well. Brostep is a nascent offshoot of dubstep, and really describes the sound you are after.

:t: Hey Nowaysj. :) Nice to see you again. Thanks for backing me up too. ;) I think that, even though I'm new here, there should be a stickied thread titled "topics beaten to death, so please don't ask". ;) I do hate being the accidental nuisance.

I actually did before posting. Maybe I didn't enter the right terms, as I've searched "excision vsts", "datsik vsts", "plugins excision uses", "plugins datsik uses", and a couple others. Any good suggestions mate? :)

I've heard some other forms of dubstep and liked those as well, but actually, it's for that very reason of pushing the synth/processing skills I wanted to know how they did it. It is not so difficult for me to hear something and come up with, say, an easy-to-make reese bassline once you know what you're doing or a nice wobble wobble. Just imagine from a DJ standpoint of view a trance/dubstep piece where the build-up has these huge synths soaked in reverb (easy to make), and then instead of the "build up to nothing", it goes into the atypical phat Brostep sound (thanks for telling me that). Everybody would go nuts. Expanding my palette from making just trance stuff is what I'm after. It's easy to get big trance leads with Poizone->Karma FX Reverb set on (I think) mode 9.

See, a rough idea of what tools they're using. :) That's all I was wanting to know. Well, that, and where to place that filter. Right at the end of the FX chain for you, and for Grooki, where it makes the most impact. :) Frohmage would be so perfect for that (can add even more distortion with that thing). So, resampling. That's one I haven't considered reading about (and it's right there in the Production Bible!) :D Well, gonna read that then.
