I was just curious, who utilizes gain structuring, and the advice/info about mixing from the gain structure/money shot thread?

I find myself referencing and recommending this to people, over and over, and think it may be one of the best threads on here (thanks to everyone who contributed). It's really helped with my mixing, I wondered if other people felt the same way. I am surprised more people haven't read this thread.

One of the first things I ever learnt regarding production, its helped me progress a lot quicker I think as I can mix down as I add new tracks/instruments etc.

Has improved my mixes ten fold since I started working in this way. I'd go as far to say it's essential.

the mixing and mastering thread is pure gold.

before i was concious of gain structure as a concept i was doing it anyway by ear but its so much easier to write and mix as you go with precision. when im done sequencing i hardly ever have to touch a level unless i start using sends.

All about the gain structuring, really does help. Obviously numbers just guide, always find I want my snare quieter than they 'should' be, but such amazing advice. Went back and listened to my first tune. Argh kick,kick, snare,repeat, 8th note HHs, repeat, 4 bar bassline, repeat, one chord for atmosphere, repeat, clashing muddy too loud horribleness. Nice to see how far you've come (not that I've come too far but...).

You've got too... Though i have a habit at the minute of not keeping stuff low and therefore having to turn things down when new instruments are added...

The one thing I consistently do is when I'm making a new track, particularly if it is just a sub style track, the sub will be turned up too much. I find when I'm making sub I have the sub channel a bit louder than it should be, but I kinda feel like I have to to feel what I'm doing properly. When I have it more or less down I turn it down a bit, and I usually have to turn it down a bit more for the final mixdownv

if I had a 10" or 12" sub maybe this wouldn't have to happen, but my monitors have 8' cones, which are great and perfectly adequate, but you can't exactly get whacked in the chest.

Yeah i'm also mixing without a sub (on nice cans actually) so find I mix subs too high, but then I'm sorta starting to like that...

I'd like to quote everyone up until grooki, and put a +1 under it. Absolutely essential information and practice.

I'm not so formal anymore though. I just keep things low, and make sure the master is well clear of clipping, usually around -6 db. And very occasionally I'll write with a limiter on the master just to be able to jam stuff out quickly.

When I'm writing a tune I try to keep the science of mixing out of it, so I can concentrate on letting the music flow (following some fundamentals like gain structure etc). it's only when I've got a tune roughly mapped out out that I'll then start to really get strict on the levels and chains

My mixes have got 10 times better since i started structuring things properly. generally now i pop all my drums into a group channel and stick that at -6, then mix everything else around that, seems to work pretty well

I apply these techniques on the daily.

I remember before i was scared that if my mixer channel were too quiet, i would have a weak and noisy signal (something you do get from analogue recording at a low level once its boosted somewhere along the lines)
So i used to try and maximise everything the loudest it could be and then fight to the mix. now its much clearer and simpler to understand. 1+1=2 right???

i keep everything down in level & when i have all the elements in place i adjust the panning, levels, just fucking with everything till it sounds nice & sitting below the clip zone. i feel my mixes aren't too bad, it's all about having a good ear & not trying to make everything loud. a don't use compression or limiting till im in the mastering stage tho. gain structure is everything. but theres that old saying, if ya use the right sound.... ya don't need to do anything!

i do and since i started doing it my mixes have improved untold amount
