Remixing Questions

seems that i post here when i need some help, anyway, i was wondering, im wanting to do a remix of a track that already has drums, vocals, bass and vocals, now i know i could use a limiter, but wouldnt that just cut out say the hi-hats?
i was wanting to almost disect the track completely, its an mp3 from an album (dont wanna say which tune incase somebody has already beaten me to it! haha), so i dont have a project file..
anyone know any decent ways i could do this?
i also tried googling it but its mainly just some shit and obvious thing on it "to remix a track sample parts from another tune" or some bogus shit
inb4: "use search bar" - i searched remixing and nothing relevant for the first 2 pages

Limiters, and EQ will only get you so far, but it is possible to some degree depending on how well you can cover some frequencies up with your own.
Most "Commercial" (I use the term loosely) tracks usually remix via stems.

A recording of each instrument...
drum stem
bass stem
lead/synth stem
incidental stem
one instrument rendered its own so its like you have the track broken down into bits and when you line them up and hit play its right, then you edit them.

The most common way to get quite a clean vocal track, is to either find and instrumental version, and you can by a process of subtraction get the vocals, or there is a way to get them by some sort of stereo inversion... acapellas4u has loads of info about it.

tbh its impossible to fully disect a track if its mixed cause every instrument will crossover. Maybe some sort of frequency specific gate i dunno man.
It depends on the style of track your remixing. If there is room for you to add a bassline or some more drums then you could just add to the main chorus or hook or whatever and then make other parts of the song more your own and just use a vocal/guitar part to go on top of your own melody bassline or whatever, im guessing its an old soul song or something.

its city lights by method man and redman, i wasn't gonna say but i really got no idea, so far ive clipped the sample from the beginning, which im gonna reuse and maybe listen to the track again and find something that might be solo or interesting...
maybe its a stupid question too but on cubase, if i put a tuner in an insert, when a track was played would it pick up the note frequency in the tuner? *was gonna rip the sub-bass line*

bumping this thread cause got a couple questions ... doing pretty much my first proper remix... the song is at 81 tempo and i want the vocals to match my 140 bpm tempo without fucking up yea... using fl studio.. probably a real simple thing to do but yea im average remixer lol and also when i have my beat sliced up in a slice channel it goes from slice 1,2,3,4 etc up the paino roll but when it gets to 143 it stops like the paino runs out of room and skipps to 1,400 something and i want everything in between .. hope someone can help yes plz

First off, I'd suggest Googling to see if anyone has done a remix of this tune before. Doesn't matter if it's another hip hop version, a house remix, a fucking pop step whatever remix, get hold of as many different versions as you can possibly find, plus the acapella (if poss.) and original.
Slice the shit out of every single one of them. Break them all down into constituent elements/hits as much as possible to give yourself a broad pallet of hits to choose from.
Then run each of the versions through a different EQing process, hi pass, low pass, whatever. Repeat to extract the different elements, ad infinitum or until you reckon you've got enough.
Go nuts.

well for the vocals, your best bet would be to slow them from 80 to 70, minimal difference that way. No need for a pitch shifter, just stretch the audio in your DAW.

whoever told u to use a limiter to achieve your purpose lied to you
the only feasible way which I have found to take parts of a full song and use them individually is by filtering
i hate to use EQ's except in very small amounts (ie. +/- 3db, and very rarely +3db)
i like to use a LP to get the low end, HP to get the high and then keep the mids. But you are going to get elements of every instrument no matter what you do, sometimes this is better sometimes worse. I imagine if you are making commercial wobblers you'd want clean samples so this wont be great for you.
someone who knows far more than me about making music on a computer will probably be able to suggest a new VST of some sort that will achieve all of this for you anyway
