Alright people. Making some tunes at the minute, hip hop atm but dubstep on the way. I was wondering what the general structure for dstep was? Cheers for your time. Alias.

Obviously each tune will develop and require different layouts and the only strict rule is keep your phrases built in 16 bar blocks.....

Maybe to get started try

16/32 bar intro
64 bar main body 1
16 bar breakdown
49 bar main body 2
16 bar outro

switch up the 1st 16 of the 2nd main body (chopped beat, varied bass??)
Keep adding and subtracting the elements...

Have fun.

Don't worry i didn't reveal the pre-bridge...post-chorus....macro recapitulation or Looping middle 12 sections so our careers are safe.....

Obviously it isn't your sections it's what you with them that counts!

id say listen to some tunes you like and follow a similar structure. Or, think of a story to tell and use a different, unusual structure to tell it.

just some thoughts.

imo, if it's a mellow/moody type number it's best to be careful with the structure. make sure it flows well. if it's got more of a inyerface/crazy vibe then sometimes it sounds good to toss some of the structure out the window. i think that can make shit more interesting.

when it comes down to it, make what sounds good to you...then ask for feedback about structure, etc.

You'd be amazed at how helpfull adhering to a simple thing like that is when writing a song/track. It basicly becomes the canvas on which you piant.

OR SOMETHING :|

my tracks tend 2 have my own brand of structure to them, i feel this gives them originality and stops them from following the crowd, although MBP, i have used this structure on several remixes

give the DJ's something (clear. obvious. 16-32 bars long) to mix in and out of, and build a breakdown/drop for a really obvious build/release of energy.

other than that, the middle's up for grabs.

This seems like the best thing to do. Big, long intro. Just drums, percussion and sparse bass. Throw in a few of your signature sounds, so people recognise what track's sliding into the mix...

Do what you like inbetween, but a breakdown is always good because they can always drop something else in at that spot if they like.

:)
